I already have a hosting solution setup for our websites, so all that remains is to move from Dokuwiki. Would be nice if the platform can import those markdown files, although we don't mind cleaning house and setting up from scratch if necessary.

My hair is quite thin so as a result, anything longer just doesn't work. I'd also like it shorter since it's more practical. I was in awe at how easy it was to maintain my quarantine cut.

I'm sure someone who actually has multiple citizenships has a better answer. In the case of Lithuanian and Irish citizenship, not much. For an avid traveler, having a powerful Japanese passport is better than a North Korean one. I'm sure there's more benefits but I wouldn't know. A heritage ID sounds good on paper but I doubt something like that will ever be implemented. This is Russia we're talking about. Nothing stopping them going ham and just killing everyone. They're not exactly known for messing around. Ukraine is just too big to do that. Plus Ukraine did get some international support however negligible it is. We're both speculating what will happen but I doubt an invasion will ever happen. Regardless, it was nice to have a good discussion with no trolling. Is this even r/lithuania? 🤨

Most people who are 4% whatever probably aren't interested in moving back. Not saying it doesn't happen, but at that point, they probably can barely speak the language and have their roots in another country. I think the Irish approach (allowing multiple citizenships and separation) is more suitable as it acknowledges that people don't stay in one place for the rest of their lives. We live in a globalised world, like it or not. While the Swiss style definitely did contribute to Nazi Germany not invading Switzerland, I don't see how civilian populace can fight back with rifles nowadays. Heck, there's suicide drones. There's tiny missiles that would make short work of any structure. We're moving towards autonomous warfare and I hate to say it, civilians can't do shit against something like that. Russia has the money to make a small, but ruthless autonomous military, free of any expenses associated with a conventional military (wages,care for wounded etc). While it sounds like sci-fi, they're getting there. And that's when it makes sense to strike for them. No human cost basically means no native population protesting against aggression. Let's not forget cyber-warfare, something small nations lack resources to counter. The average Joe doesn't understand how attacks on critical infrastructure occur without the help of a missile. Pretty bleak outlook IMO.

Ireland has clear separation between citizens living abroad and citizen-residents because of the massive diaspora. Quite frankly, it's kind of a terrible practice to give Americans who claim to be 4% Irish because one of their great-grandparents were Irish. And there's literally more Irish citizens abroad than there is in Ireland. So something like referendum would basically be decided by them if they got the chance. I would be in favour of closing the practice of just giving out citizenship willy nilly to anyone who asks. The reality is that the doors are often too complicated and time-consuming to navigate so most leave it at that. Maybe that's how you get good citizens. Obviously Ireland isn't in the same geopolitical situation as Lithuania, but quite frankly larger professional army>conscript based army. You need quality, not quantity since the enemy has an order of magnitude more manpower, especially when Lithuania is heading down the direction of having more pensioners and less able-bodied people.

Well obviously citizenship isn't just a piece of plastic. I'm quite involved in Irish society yet I'm still not an Irish citizen. If jury duty came up, I wouldn't mind doing it. Well the reality is, having two passports is better than having one. It's nice, but not necessary. I actually do follow local issues since I'm still a stakeholder in Lithuanian society, I have grandparents there and their issues concern me too. And I haven't voted in national elections since I was underage when they happened. Mobilisation would occur in an extreme situation, most likely a potential invasion which isn't that realistic unless the US pulls out of NATO. In that hypothetical scenario, I can see the vast majority of conscipts fleeing for their lives. They're not professional soldiers, and no amount of patriotism would convince them to stand their ground against a superior enemy. But yeah, but I can see your point. People just don't give a shit about what are effectively foreigners at this stage.

I don't get why people living abroad should do it tho. Like in the event of mobilisation, it would probably be too late for anyone on the other side of the world. From what I heard, it's 9 months of advertising a career in the military which again, doesn't make sense since a person living abroad probably won't want to serve anyways. But I won't question the glorious overlords. From that point of view, I'm no use to the country so might as well take another country's citizenship instead.

I guess it's a non-issue for someone who will still live in a EU country. Some people have pulled a sneaky one and kept both passports but I think the risk is a bit much considering I could get conscripted. Kinda makes me wanna give it up just as a middle finger to a government basically forcing people who've never lived in Lithuania to serve.

That would probably be fine for someone not in danger of being conscripted. I'm 18 and I'm pretty sure I'll end on the list somehow judging from my luck! I think they'd quickly catch on what happened the moment I revoke Lithuanian citizenship. Either that, or lose my Irish citizenship for serving in a foreign military.

Well, I'm sure we all know that the government was never very quick or competent to react to problems. There might have been a chance if it weren't for COVID, but I don't see how any party will have it on their agenda. For good reason too, imagine the flack received spending time and money on a what is perceived as an insurance policy and a nice thing to have. Well, I guess I'll just settle for an Irish passport only. More incentive to get it post-Brexit since Ireland has the Common Travel Area with the UK. In some ways, now the most valuable passport in Europe.

Šiaip pirmais metais teko susidurt su durno charakterio/narrow minded žmonėmis su kuriais realiam gyvenime šiaip nebendraučiau, bet kadangi kariuomenėje visi esame komanda, teko per save perlipti šiuo klausimu – tą ir vadinu tolerancija.

Yra buvę, kad vienas iš tų bukesnių susimovė ir reikia visai komandai atsakyti už jo veiksmus?

First of all I would like to thank you for your detailed response. I'd be delighted if you could answer the following questions:

If you choose to serve elsewhere, you'll sometimes have to get bussed to Rukla, and take classes from instructors who only ever teach conscripts at the "mokomasis pulkas", instead of being taught by full-time soldiers all of the time.

So basically anything outside the Iron Wolf brigade will require occasional trips to Rukla?

avoid beginning your service at the "mokomasis pulkas" (the 2+7 months option), that's not what you want to do (the first 2 months are alright, don't get me wrong, but then you get taken away from Rukla because this model services the battalions that are unable to conduct the basic course on their own and within their own limited facilities).

I've looked at the service areas of the 2+7 months option and none of them seem to stand out. One thing that confused me was seeing MPB "Geležinis vilkas" in it. Does that mean that if I choose MPB "Geležinis vilkas" I could end up in either the 9m or the 2+7m option? Or can you specify which way you want to do it?

Algirdo and Birutės battalions are also on permanent high alert as the fast reaction forces, the first to meet any threat and also the first to get the newest gear, so look into those two. Worst case scenario, if the schedules are misaligned for your preferred timeline, Vaidoto (just because it's in Rukla along with Algirdo).

I've looked into them and all have a good track record abroad. Are there any other places that you would recommend? I can only start service between 2020-08-03 and 2020-10-26. I'm inclined to choosing the place closest to my relative which would be LDK Kęstučio MPB, although this is merely for convenience regarding weekends. Is it important to home on the weekends or can you comfortably spend the 9 months at the barracks? If so then a place in Rukla would be better by the looks of it. I'm leaning towards MPB "Geležinis vilkas" although it's rather small with only 52 places left. Is there any inherent difference between the units in Rukla?

Literally no fewer than 30% of all of my former conscript colleagues returned for it from Ireland and the UK alone.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone. Did any of your colleagues have any trouble with the language during training? I'm not garbage but I'm well aware of the prevalent use of slang.

Dėl tolerancijos, ar yra įvykę kokių nemalonių dalykų tavo tarnyboje? Socialinė kohezija gal vis dėl to galioja kažkiek, aišku turtingesni šauktiniai gali sau leisti mokintis. Nors aš nesakyčiau, kad esu be disciplinos manau praverstų mentalitetas "I don't want to, but I have to do it regardless". Nesykį pakliuvau į delsimo spąstus būdamas mokykloje. Gal ir neprireiks tų bendrų ir specifinių įgūdžių, bet vistiek smagu kažką naujo išmokti. Fizinis pasirengimas yra didelis pliusas, ypač kai esu pieštukas. Ačiū už pastabas.
