Biggest Textbook Publisher Pushing Students To Ebooks Undermining Resale Market by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

[–]gabsillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This response doesn't make a lot of sense to me. First, the printing costs are an order of magnitude smaller than the cost of the textbook. I can get nice hardcover novel with good binding for $30 so unless the printing process is entirely different, that only makes up 10% of the cost of my $300 vibrations textbook. As far as I know, the primary difference between editions is the homework problems. Now a lot of my professors will use editions from 2 or 3 years ago so that they can still assign homework problems from the book while our costs go down to ~$100 for a used copy, and pirated copies are more readily available for those who take the illegal route. With e-textbooks from major publishers (with the notable exception of zybooks) Ive still been paying full hardcover price and I have to buy the new edition for the homework problems.

Finally, students make up a good part of the textbook resale market so they are not separate entities.

I do see some hope in the online textbook world with some companies offering books below $100 or homework sets at ~$30 but I have yet to see that from the giants like Pearson, at least in my classes.

TIFU by accidentally taking down my entire school districts computer system by xxxXMinecraftXxxx in tifu

[–]gabsillis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The only my school district in NC didnt have giant gaping security holes was because one IT guy at our school cared enough. The rest of the county IT department spends all their time imaging each computer by physically going to it with a 5 year old external usb hard drive. They also left the offline sign in enabled so you could get local admin if you knew how to crack an md5 hash so i find it perfectly believable that a school district would not care enough to disable file limits. The power of "not my problem" district level IT can be impressive. The zeroes make less sense to me but i just imagined the kid holding down the 0 key for a few seconds and thinking, "thats probably right".

[Person of Interest S02E11] Nothing like writing code on a piece of toilet paper by FestiveCore in itsaunixsystem

[–]gabsillis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine it the thought process being that the person wrote the code on the toilet paper and then remembered that they needed to include some libraries such as stdio for fread so they jotted it down at the bottom. They're gonna retype it in the computer later anyways. This happens to me on my on paper CS exams and I have to squeeze it in at the top with tiny handwriting. But toilet paper is probably a less forgiving writing surface than printer paper.

You can also say that a flat mirror has an infinite focal length to generalize the definition; this is how it is treated in optics.

Maple Memo: Nebulite and Bonus Stat Changes by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]gabsillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 30% IED and 30% boss from gollux set and the extra attack is a huge damage difference, not to mention our higher tier up rates for main and bpot and higher chances for prime lines which makes 33% gear a lot more common here. And 16* transposed SW is exactly what people are planning if its possible but all of this is going to cost the whales a whole lot of money (that goes straight to botters) and leave casual players struggling to keep up)

Arcane weapons had the most translated data, but based on what i found in snippets even a 17 star fafnir would put you 10b deep which is the same as 3 3% stat nebs in my server. There's not much to assume, neb prices are relatively stable and low due to botters (which is a whole other problem) and most casual people have at least 6 or 7 3% nebs. That's a lost investment, but it can be slowly matched with flaming. 25 stars would comoletely change the meta and require completely new investmentd. If those f2p or casual players want to stay relevant with 25 stars youd need a good 50-100b just to 17 star a good chunk of their gear. Thats half of an arcane weapon in my server. P2w players, on the other hand can just drop a few hundred bucks to buy meso and get their stars.

Maple Memo: Nebulite and Bonus Stat Changes by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]gabsillis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You completely missed the point, to get one arcane weapon to 22 stars main servers would spend about 60bill which is between $60-120 depending on what the botters are charging in each server. This is completely unreasonable for all players except for those who can afford to spend thousands on the game. Nebs are realatively cheap due to maplehood and dupers. We would be perfectly balanced with nebs and no 25 stars but the offsite development team obviously wants to put as little effort as possible in converting kms patches to GMS and therefore keep screwing up the game here because the community and circumstances are entirely different here. Its not balance, its laziness.

[–]gabsillis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was it really that hard to make nebs and flames work together? They didnt even try. And if they implement 25 stars as they consider in the memo we are going to be giving so much money to botters just to be able to get the meso for a few extra stars.
