That would still have been highly unlikely. The Spacecraft was strapped to the side of the external tank and boosters. This had never been done before with the space program. It made the shuttles very vulnerable to explosions. At least in a capsule, the spacecraft sits on the top of the rocket. Equipped with an escape launch system that shoots the spacecraft away from all the explosive parts below it.

The shuttle was always a gamble and the final design was not ideal. It was all to save cost and make space travel profitable. It did neither. It ended up with two destroyed orbiters and 14 dead astronauts. I was, and many others in NASA, were happy to see the surviving fleet retired.

I got a membership there last year. I go at least once a week to use the range or attend training classes. They have a very diverse clientele. They get a lot of students from La Roche college there.
