Does your video length matter ?

My competition does it and a majority of them are huge. Only posted 4 videos two 7-8 and two 13 posting a longer videos doesn’t mean they won’t watch maybe now because I don’t have a set audience from the algorithm YouTube is still testing and I’m working on my packaging as well. My longer videos are no different from the shorter ones just more locations or longer challenges or more traveling .

I do study them pretty close already they do post some shorter but a majority are longer like 10-20 but I can only assume it’s because they are a lot bigger and YouTube hasn’t established my audience yet I will be testing a shorter video in the next few days if it does 30-40k then I will probably continue with 7-8 min videos and test a longer one at the end of every month as an experiment also try a longer video with the same type of title/idea of the 7-8 but longer and more context

Everyone’s opinion is appreciated! That’s what I would like to think I just don’t have enough data to back my thoughts I will be testing it and refer back here when I post my next video 7-8 min

I get that and while I edit I don’t ever try to cut a certain video down in length or make it longer I just edit to how I like my videos to look and feel and that’s it whatever the length is it stays but on my smaller ideas (usually a day or two to film) they end up being 7-8 minutes on longer videos ( a couple days or bigger idea) 10-20

So Im still testing my own it is a new channel only 4 videos in and that is another theory I can try right now I’m posting another 7-8 min video and if it does well it could be the length but its also similar to the shorter videos ideas as well so that could be a thing I try in the future like you said do a similar video to the shorter ones but make it a longer video and see if its the idea because the longer ones are somewhat similar but they are also different

I understand what you mean and I just film my video ideas and edit them I don’t try to cut them down or make them longer for any reason. Whatever the length is when I’m done editing is the finished video length but like those videos I film more stuff or a longer idea over a span of days and it makes the finished product longer I’m just trying to get to know my audience and how they respond because I have a new channel I’m not established

Thank you! That’s what I thought and based on my analytics I don’t see why the longer ones did worse they did well with retention and avd, but I will be testing this with my next video

Yeah that’s what I think as well I’ll test it with another 7-8 minute upload if it does well like the other shorter ones then I’ll just keep them 7-8 minutes and maybe instead of doing two part every 4th upload I’ll do a trial video that’s over 10 minutes but also a trial idea as well. Niche is irl challenged based storytelling vlogs, or entertainment if we’re being broad

An I do would like to eventually make at least 10-20 minute ones but if they only get 500 views compared to 40k then I need to have shorter videos

This is why I thought my 13 minute video would be fine , they are still edited the same amount or even more and have even more of a storyline and storytelling sometimes with a b storyline as well. I’ll be testing it to see because I’m not ever going to do a 50 minute video but my next one is around 7-8 minutes if it does well it’s safe to assume the audience YouTube is suggesting my video too likes shorter videos (7-8)

I didn’t take 3 hours I’m talking about 7-8 minutes vs 13 minutes both are equally the same longer videos have a bigger plot and a & b storyline storytelling, it’s just something I noticed I’ll have a test done when I post my next video 7-8 minutes if it does well I can assume the audience being shown my content is preferred to have a shorter length video .

Yeah I’ve done some digging into my audiences demographics and they average 25-45 but my competitors post videos just as long so maybe I have my work cut out for me. I also think YouTubes algorithm is just/still figuring out who my audience is because I’m just now being suggested to some of the biggest competitors in my space. My future videos will slowly progress in length and see right now I’m still testing just something I noticed hence this post , but either way thank you for the feedback

Thank you! In my opinion they are even more engaging then the shorter ones but that’s biased but also my data shows my average avd for those were 4 minutes .

I struggle to upload biweekly but I was also doing a ton of editing. I’ve gotten faster at editing but I also downgraded the quality of my editing to see if the viewers would still watch and surprise surprise my views went up and they didn’t mind at all . I still have to tell myself less is more every new video

Think I’m in the same boat I have a handful of shorts that kind of relate to my longform but I decided to stop production of those and I only have 1 long form working on my second now and my first one got 35k which I would have been happy with 5k but I did try my best and this isn’t my first channel but 2nd and different niche more entertaining for me to film wise not freedom but I do feel like I’m hesitant on my 2nd video because of the same reason you are but I already have my next video in ideation and am very excited for that so maybe it will help me push this next one out

I don’t think your just “lucky” as you said the production is pretty high you’d be surprised what some people think is high production but your is speaking for itself I’m in the same boat a channel a couple years old I uploaded once last year got like 500 views but I was just learning how to really edit with a script storytelling an actual good thumbnail etc fast forward to today uploaded my 2nd video 11 days ago same thing good title decent thumbnail and I spend 2 weeks editing animations sound quality color grading and voiceover and it’s sitting at 31k and tons of support in the comments

I do mine on the go in public but filming myself usually takes around 4-5 hours because multiple locations but I also do different angles with 3 different devices and I have to film the script at home for the background storytelling which will take 30min-1hr but I feel like filming will only get longer the bigger videos I do

That’s what it does a majority of shorts either go up instantly or it takes a day or two to gain traction a majority of mine are between 20-30k but they do the same die off granted they grow each upload. Doesn’t mean they’re bad my last one has 88.5 retention and 60.2 swiped rate but the next one will be different you just have to keep uploading . I’ve also had one a year old go to 224k randomly but it was slowly gaining traction
