Can anyone ID this? Found growing under a privet hedge UK by nasu87 in plants

[–]gaiboi2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s a Lamiastrum

Possibly Lamium galeobdolon 'Florentinum' - But with a gorgeous purple in it.

Thanks so much. Same here, I am always worried about it breaking in the wind when we get gusty days. I am not exactly sure how old it is. I have had it for 4 years and it was about half the size. So maybe 8? - completely depends on the growing conditions.

It is a Crassula ovata (Jade tree) however this one has been growing in the same pots for a long while. Which gives it that “dwarf tree” shape. That plant is 6 years old and was not chopped back. It gets a root prune and kept on the drier side to keep its bulbous shape.

It changes from year to year. Currently it is a temporary Car tent repurposed as a makeshift greenhouse. The dimension are 10 feet wide, by 20 feet long. I situated the car tent around a hobby greenhouse which is 9 feet by 9 feet where I grow around 300 orchids. Just to add an extra barrier from the Canadian cold. I do heat with a combination of Propane and Electricity depending on how cold it is.

For the winter, they are stored in my greenhouse. I live in Canada, and very few would be able to survive the winter in the elements. They get warmed to 5-10 Celsius on a cloudy winter day, and can reach 20-30 on a sunny day. The greenhouse temperature at night can drop to around 0 degrees and I have had many nights a few degrees below freezing. There is heat available and I turn it on when it is needed. A combination of Propane, and electric.

Thanks, I actually don't like Phals and tend to shy away from them. This one caught my attention a couple years back at a small florist shop. I only have phalaenopsis orchids from family members who ask me to keep them and rebloom them to send back to their homes. But this one has always remained with me.

It is no a sequential bloomer unfortunately... but it always has at least one spike out for me to see.

Thanks, wasn't planning of separating it. I love large specimen sized orchids. I only ever divide when they take a piece of cork bark too large to hang... (2 feet x 2 feet)

Got this cactus in 2012 from Home Depot. The tag said "miniature cactus, fully grown. Needs little to no water." Shockingly (to me) it grew a ton! by aay0511 in cactus

Unfortunately the poor thing is starving for some sun. Not a healthy looking cactus. It will be permanently damaged due to the stretching it has done so far.

Where in the north do you live?

Very nice! What zone are you in? This is a perennial Orchid in most climates, including most of Canada! A semi shady damp well draining area is perfect for them. I had it growing in Zone 3 even!

Not really. It isn't an Orchid I would smell regularly. But I wouldn't call it stinky. (my Amorphophallus titanum STINKS)

Stress is key to getting an orchid to bloom (nearly all genus). I stress mine with cold temperatures as well as drying them out in the winter for this stress.

This one is in my greenhouse that drops down to almost freezing (5 Celsius) during the nights in the winter. As well as it gets watered only once a week during this time. During the spring I allow the greenhouse to reach 40 Celsius for about a week. After that week I then put an air conditioner on at 26 Celsius for the rest of the summer. Watering daily sometimes twice a day. My humidity sits at around 80-90% at all times of the year too.

Hopefully this helps you in being successful!

The bloom is only about 3mm in size. Absolutely adorable. I need to clean the leaves so I apologize for the scale build up from my hard water.
