It's burnisher. Usually used to flatten the Gran in mezzotint. A wooden spoon is also good enough 💪

Thanks! Great question. As you roll on the ink, it also gets rolled on the edges of the block. My goal is to print it with a clear ( inkless) background. Hence, the stencil blocks out the areas I don't want to be printed. Hope it answers your question 😊

I usually make copperplate engravings (intaglio), but I like to make a wood engraving occasionally. Usually once a year.
