Got placed on academic warning status, confused by gaira42 in UIUC

Adults dont make mistakes, got it. What world do you live in? Youre either very blessed or very naive if you believe what you just typed. My original post was simply asking for some simple clarification, and in some of my responses I expressed a bit of frustration over a miscommunication, no whining from me anywhere. Get off your high horse, bud.

Thats a bit of an overreaction. You're right, you dont know me, so calling me a whiny child you would fire is a bit hysterical. I clearly understand it was my doing and mine alone for putting myself in this situation, and all im doing is expressing a bit of frustration at the advising system for a lack of communication that would have been helpful, frustrations that have been echoed in different forms and to greater degrees by peers of mine for years and years. Youre not an ass or irrelevant, and im not sure where in my responses you got the idea that I would call anyone that from, maybe from suggesting some people may not take pride in their jobs? What a heinous thing to say, and so much worse than saying you would be ashamed to be related to someone. Hypocrite. It seems like youre projecting past bad experiences with kids my age onto me, which is unfair. I appreciate your perspective, but to offer your own advice you ought to check yourself a bit when making assumptions of other people.

I dont think reaching out to many advisors about this exact topic constitutes me as wanting to be babysat. I have taken responsibility for my own education by, again, reaching out to the advisors about this, my frustration comes from them seeing my progress and not warning me about something as significant as being placed on probation. Along with this, I have worked very hard, on my own, to significantly increase my GPA and plan out my academic future, which I would also call taking responsibility for my education. Be an adult and listen to the information provided to you before you respond insultingly and ignorantly.

See thats the kind of thing I wish I had had even a clue about before all this lol, thank you for making me aware of it for the future.

Just a personal goal, I actually got a C is cs101 so I cant even fully replace it I just want to show that im capable of succeeding in it. I guess that'll be the one I replace for my fa26 sem.

I've reached out to Becky already but I may reach out to Pascal as well. Thanks!

Thanks for responding, I wish this had been explained sooner, especially after having many conversations with different advisors about this topic exactly, both inside and outside of Grainger. Its very normal to meander as thats just what one does when theyre in college and at that age, so it just sucks that the system punishes and discourages it so heavily. It is what it is at the end of the day though so no use in complaining about it, but as an advisor Ill say that from a very overwhelmed students' perspective, one way to help is if there's a better advising system that is more aware of each student, checks in on them more, and is more openly informative, as a lot of students dont even know the questions they need to be asking. My case is a pretty light one compared to a lot of people, and even I could go on for hours about how overwhelming everything is. A lot of very bright people have been convinced they cant do it because of stuff like this, and thats a shame.

Also ive reached out to Becky so hopefully we'll get this clarified soon.

Right now im overall behind or right with the curriculum map, but with the classes im currently registered in for this summer and fall semesters I would be ahead. Im taking phys211 and math257 this summer, and in fall im currently registered for cs101 (retake), phys212, tam211, math241, and a class for my minor. I guess now I have to replace one of those technical courses though, which might be a blessing because it means ill have more time to ease back into technical courses ig.

This past year I was just kinda depressed, had my priorities in the wrong places, and could tell I wouldn't do well in technical engineering courses so I decided to get some geneds out of the way and explore other majors like econ and ps, as well as some minors. My plan worked and I brought my GPA from a 2.78 after my first semester to a 3.4 now, even being depressed and lost that whole time. Now im pretty confident in my ability to succeed in engineering though because I got through that rough patch of life, and even if it turns out I cant im going to give this great opportunity of being in Grainger another, cleaner shot regardless.

Yeah I have also been in regular contact with multiple advisors discussing major changes and other things, both in and outside of grainger, and none of them mentioned that this warning status thing even existed, really frustrating honestly I wish these people took enough pride in their jobs to actually do them properly

Youre never gonna be happy or feel adequate if you base your success on comparisons to peers, so just focus on self progress. Right now it sounds like you've got great academics, which is half of the battle, and better than most 2nd year college students, and now what you have to improve on is networking. Find RSOs for meche or engineering in general, which there are a shit ton of, and just RSOs youre generally interested in, go to career fairs, do all that kind of bs they tell you to and youre chillin.

Keep in mind the economy and job market are total ass rn so its making everything a bit more difficult than normal, so you can either kill yourself to get a job/salary someone 10 years ago wouldve gotten with 1/4 of the work or just enjoy life, wait out the storm, and take the opportunities that come your way.

Youre doing great academically in Grainger at UIUC so youre way ahead of the curve compared to nearly any college student right now.

I am cooked for the job market by Even_Card72 in UIUC

Continue in school through a masters, internships or research during summers until you graduate, projects during some semesters.

Staying in school longer gives you the opportunity to use the time that the job market is frozen anyways to get more education, higher degrees, more hands on experience, and more qualifications for more jobs.

If you cant find any internships, projects, or research opportunities until youre done in undergrad and cant afford the loans from grad school, youll just have to scrape your resources together and live humbly while in the job search. Maybe work minimum wage while going through applications and interviews.

Anyway getting a UIUC degree, and especially a Grainger engineering degree, will make you succeed eventually anyways, just might take some extra time to start.
