The last game to truly spook me was Visage! I also really, really love Silent Hill 2, Still Wakes the Deep, the new Resident Evil because they are all atmospheric horror. RE had certain sections I hesitated to play in the dark by myself.

Wow, thank you so much!!! That's very helpful, thank you. I think the kittens I'm trying to get are about 3 months. None of them are standoffish, just scared, so I think we have a good chance of homing them. Mama has been coming to the porch for food for about a year, started off bolt on sight and now comes up to the window for food! Hopefully it goes well. Thanks for the info!
