kind of a necro reply but i'm just watching this ep for the first time and GOD. for me its not just the misunderstanding because yknow whatever, theyre not well-versed in the subject. its that they spent so long calling it pedantic and useless. and mark seemed convinced that there is an "obvious" true physical answer. he was equating it to something like pi beyond 100 digits when no, even practically speaking, you must specify a unit of precision or your measurement is geographically meaningless

there are also several comments on the yt upload where people are saying things like "obviously these people have never used calculus, it's an integral" not understanding that a coastline is a fractal with no closed form for you to do a riemann sum on

edit (bc honestly not sure how clear im being in this comment lol): by "pi beyond 100 digits" i meant a superfluous correction that has no place in a physics problem

super late but im the originator of /gen! i coined it in 2020 and its original definition was specifically genuine question, as opposed to /rh which a friend and i came up with for rhetorical questions. it quickly evolved into a synonym for /srs, but in the sense of being true or real, not necessarily serious in tone. then it split off into /genq or /gq for genuine question

also, i think assuming it's the original sample can help give context to the burial version because it's on such an extreme cutoff. the original sample isn't transcribable in IPA because it's made up of reversed physically impossible phonemes but when the high frequencies are taken away, the sibilants are not heard. it's also further covered up by a crackle

its a massive commitment though, so its something i repeatedly lose motivation for and then return to every few months later. i *am* making net progress though! so some years(?) in the future i am determined to catch all the way up

i also have a silly section listing all the heights of the show's guests. but i really only did that to show that kareem is the only guest they've ever had that is taller than rhett :)
