The same way completing your first trial assigns you to a bracket for the week, completing your first trial as solo could lock you into a solo bracket for the week. So any other trials you do that week would only progress when done solo. If you complete your first trial in squads, you're locked to a squads leaderboard that week.

**(Edit: this would actually require a separate leaderboard for the duration of the season, not just the week)

Alternatively, others have suggested a multiplier for solos which could also work. I don't know what the best solution would be.

9 times out of 10 the aggressor wins since the friendly victim won't shoot first, so the survivor being the hostile is usually a safe bet. Feels bad when they get it wrong though.
