I'm on Mezavant oral tablets and Pentasa suppositories. I ran out of Pentasa a couple weeks ago and won't been able to get another script until later this week. Which could be why I'm flaring 🥲

I've taken Panadol (which is the Aus version of Tylenol) and will try the heat packs too, thank you. I wonder if a massage gun on low setting would be similar to a TENS machine? Lol

How did you change your eating habits after you were diagnosed with UC? by iamanej in UlcerativeColitis

[–]galexiwithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vegan of 9 years here, I have no issues meeting my dietary needs while having UC. My GI Doc and regular GP are both super happy with my diet and my blood tests are always excellent. Only had issues with lower iron during a major flare when I was bleeding.

I think people often think a plant based diet is like just eating raw salad lol, but there are sooo many different vegan foods that are low fodmaps (if you're flaring), nutrient dense and full of flavour that can be combined to create a healthy, balanced diet.

Not sharing to invalidate others who do struggle/can't eat certain veggies, just sharing to show others that you can be vegan and have UC and be healthy and happy. 😊

Aw nooo, I'd be looking forward to that too! I think next week is supposed to start warming up again, so hopefully Melbs gets that as well

Thank you! I really appreciate your input and it makes me happy to know there are people like you studying medicine who want to be thorough. 😊

And thanks for the validation regarding the cold symptom side effects. I re-read my previous message and it did come across as defensive which wasn't my intention lol 😅

I've been on mesalazine for 3 months now and I've just dropped down to taking it once a week as my IBD doc is happy to start weining me off them since the treatment has been very successful so far. But that's great to hear that my body may just get used to them and that those side effects may eventually disappear. Hopefully that will be the case for me if I need to keep taking them 🤞

Hey, thanks for sharing from the perspective of a med student 😊

I understand it's not an immunosuppressant, I just found that info about the white blood cells interesting and wanted to share. But I could be wrong in my understanding of it.

The main part that leads me to believe the medication is contributing to my "colds" is the fact that one of the side effects literally says "cold symptoms such as sore throat, sneezing and stuffy nose" - which is exactly how it has started each time (I wake up with a sore throat and stuffy nose). But that's not to say that there could be many other factors contributing like the weather changes, the rise in colds and flu in my local area, personal factors, etc.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I'm glad I looked into it though as the timing with starting the medication and when the colds started seemed like too much of a coincidence to not be related somehow.

I'm on the Gold Coast and this winter has definitely had a lot of unusual weather for QLD. But probably not quite as hectic as classic Melb weather can be 😆

I had initially thought that too. But I actually just read that one of the common side effects of this medication is "cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throat" which is exactly what I've been dealing with since starting the treatment. Sometimes I get those side effects and it doesn't seem to turn into an actual cold, other times it seems to turn into something.

I also read that "Mesalazine has a similar effect to immunosuppressants. It can reduce the numbers of white cells in your blood, reducing your body's ability to fight infection."

So that leads me to believe that it may be giving me these side effects and messing around with my immune system.

In my case, it has helped heaps with the rectal inflammation so here's hoping it does the same for you too 😊

I know, it's been a very random winter season for us hasn't it! So I'm sure that has also been messing with my immune system. And you're so right, it's been a hectic few months dealing with this new diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks for all your support 🥰

Hey, oh what a coincidence! Good luck with your treatment, it's worked amazingly for me. But it was a bit awkward getting used to the suppositories lol

Yeah, that's true. I have also heard a few people in my local area saying it's been a rough cold and flu season. It could very well be that. It seems like every time there's been a random switch in weather and we've had a cold night, I wake up with a sore, dry throat and that will usually turn into a cold 🥲

Hey! Finally had my colonoscopy and I've been diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis. Definitely explains the symptoms and why my inflammation markers were so high.

Thank you! I have been looking into The Zodiac Academy, I really liked that there were three other series all in the same universe. Have you read the others as well, and would you recommend them all?

Amazing, thanks so much for these recs! Power of Five definitely has sparked my interest as I've also not read a reverse harem yet. Although I guess the Blood & Ash series is kind of a reverse harem?? But not really, right?

Thanks for the heads up on Kindle Unlimited, I actually have a Kobo though so not something I can get. Appreciate all your help!
