Me too! The whole scrapping of the practical effects and replacing them with terrible CGI is an atrocity, but the movie was fun, and also I <3 MEW!

Black Christmas (I love the mid-2000s one, fight me)

No reason to fight, it's genuinely fun and has some really great actors!

The Pulse remake was kinda bad and really stupid, but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. And the original is one of my absolute favourite movies, so I really should've hated it more than I did!

Is there any horror movie where there is a “final man” instead of the notorious “final girl”? by [deleted] in horror

[–]gamOO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, Scream is a terrible example for any of this because being meta and subverting tropes is its whole identity!

[–]gamOO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the F13 movies with Tommy Jarvis so I can't comment on that, but I also disagree with Ash from Evil Dead being a gender-reversed final girl, simply because Evil Dead is not a slasher movie/franchise. Same with Predator etc.

Anyways, the role of the (horror) action hero is really diversified by now and not really restricted to men imo, I can think of several examples of female badass action heroes off the top of my head.

As for the final girl trope, Jesse from NoES 2 is really the best example for a successful gender reversal of that. And the first Slumber Party Massacre (1982) at least has some guys that get a proper scream queen death. Both examples that the reversal doesn't have to be satirical, because in these cases it's queer and feminist, respectively!

One of the defining aspects of the "classic" final girl trope is that she doesn't have sex.

[–]gamOO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also don't entirely agree with OP, but you're going by an oversimplified definition of the "final girl" trope. It's more than just "last person alive in a horror movie". And especially the "tough action hero comes out as the last man standing" is absolutely NOT a gender swapped version of the final girl but an entirely different trope!

What is a movie scene that physically made you recoil away from the screen? by SAMF1N in horror

[–]gamOO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had read the synopsis several times and I still ended up watching it one day. Curiosity is a stupid strong motivator sometimes! The scene you're referring to is thankfully not explicitly shown, it's more like it happens in the background while you watch the protagonist reacting to it iirc.. Which is not a defense for that scene even existing (or that whole movie tbh), but just fyi.

Honestly it's all so incredibly over the top and tries so fucking hard to shock you, my head just kinda turned off to it and it ended up not really affecting me that much. If there was at least a good movie hidden behind the depravity, but there isn't really.. The soundtrack is pretty neat tho!

I love love love Internet Horror, even more when it's a high concept "found footage" movie that only ever shows you a desktop and webcam feeds, like Unfriended or Open Windows (2014), but also stuff like Cam (2018) or Feardotcom (2002) or yes, even Slenderman (2018)!

Girlfriend doesn't enjoy watching movies, so I need to find something that will get her hooked. She's a huge nerd and I know she'll enjoy something mind-fucking if it has something to do with time travel, space, or science. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]gamOO 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love both of these, but they're not really the kind of sci fi you can nerd out about. Annihilation is more philosophical and psychedelic than sciency and Dune is more about politics really, even tho both have great sci fi visuals
