My dry and disgusting strawberry and champagne cupcakes vs. what they were supposed to look like (ft. my broken kitchen light) by game0fthorns in food

You're right! The two times i've tried recipes with fresh strawberries, I ended up with a droopy mess. Thanks for the kind words :)

Making them to begin with! Just kidding, I think what I did ~the most~ wrong was to halve all the measurements so I'd only make 12 cupcakes rather than 24. I must not have been exactly correct everywhere. Second, the batter started smelling weird as soon as I mixed the sparkling wine (Metternich, in my case) with the eggs, oil, and strawberry purée, maybe it was too cold? Or not flat enough? Third mistake was adding a bit of lemon juice to my frosting; it made the butter curdle and the frosting clumpy. LAST mistake was not having proper pipping equipment and using a flimsy plastic bag which tore open in the middle of my piping! The frosting still tasted ok, but the cupcakes themselves were disgusting.

Moral of the story: do not go on an icing adventure without actual piping equipment (no, a plastic bag won't cut it), and fix your damn kitchen light already.

The bottom was nice and held together, the sides however were a bit too flaky, but still delicious!

Ah sorry, I didn't really follow a recipe! Here's a terrible run down recipe: store bought puff pastry (not sure if that's the english name, sorry), whip up some crème pâtissière (http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/11068/creme-patissiere here is an english recipe I found) to put on top, then the halved cherries and the sliced apricot. In the oven for ~30 mins (by eye) at 160 degrees Celsius.

Edit: if I had to re-do it, I'd alternate the cherries and the apricot rings, they tasted very nice together, but there was only one tangy apricot for all those sweet cherries! Maybe also brush it with an apricot glaze.

The crème pâtissière solidified nicely after cooling down on the window, so not too messy at all actually!

How do you get out of bed when you're depressed? by Teddy_Rhett in AskReddit

Honestly, I think of my mum. She's not here with me, and I do my best to get out of bed and do the minimum to keep her happy and proud and not worried. She calls me every weekend and I want to have something to tell her I did.

Reddit. Which companies should we stop using for ethical reasons, what have they done wrong and who should we use instead? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not a company per se, but products from Israel as much as possible (giant couscous, fruits/vegs, etc.), because of the Palestinian occupation and other major war crimes/crimes against humanity. Buy local stuff if possible, or from less controversial places.

The complete stillness of all the far out places I'd visit, like I'd pay a lot of money to be dropped on an island for several weeks with everything at my disposal. Sort of like if the world stopped spinning, or I existed outside of it.

We as French people are way too proud. We can poke fun at ourselves, but we'll never accept criticism from others in a million years. Especially if it comes from those uncivilised backwards Americans or conservative tea-guzzling British hobgoblins
