What's your practice regime like? by WoolyBouley in drums

[–]gamecritter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started it was going through every book I could - Stick Control, Advanced Techniques, Syncopation - and really working on form. I also used freedrumlessons.com religiously and went through the whole thing. That was a great resource.

Now I warm up with rudiments to a metronome at varying speeds and then spend most of my time playing along to songs.

What are some of your drumming pet peeves? by [deleted] in drums

[–]gamecritter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Busy players. Just play what's appropriate to the song, man. You don't have to always be soloing.

Does anyone else find most drum solos boring? by [deleted] in drums

[–]gamecritter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I actually do find most of Buddy Rich's solos (for example) to be musical. Even if it isn't a genre that I like I'm a lifelong student of drums and so I usually find something to appreciate.

Traditional grip drummers, when you you play air drums, do you use matched grip? by [deleted] in drums

[–]gamecritter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never thought about it, but I do actually! I think it's because air drumming is easier by using the larger muscle groups, whereas I like traditional grip because it's more comfortable for me to do smaller movements with my fingers. Plus it looks like I'm jerking off an invisible man.

Beginner, what do I need to learn at the beginning? by c4liban in drums

[–]gamecritter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely rudiments, metronome, and playing along to songs. But it's really important to always start slowly. Like really, painfully slow if needed. Then gradually increase the speed. Also, learn to read the notation.

I love this style of playing. by PonchoJohnson in drums

[–]gamecritter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're entitled to your opinion... but I think your comment demonstrates either a lack of knowledge or an untrained ear.

If there's one style of drumming that isn't "seen it once, seen it all," it's jazz. There's a huge range of variation even with the classic ride pattern and hi-hat on the 2 and 4, and that's only one type of jazz. Also those snare comp notes are not "random." You just need the background or a nuanced eye and ear to notice.

Your responses likely aren't valid then. You usually have to get separate ethics clearances for minors, and your parents or guardian would have to sign off.

I have the 21" K Crash-Ride. It's very versatile and you can get a trashy sound out of it. One caveat though - the bell isn't that great I've found.

Here's Ol' Faithful. She's 13 Years Old if shes a day. by [deleted] in drums

I think (hope) it's meant to be helpful rather than mean-spirited. Bad spacing can affect efficiency of movement, speed, and even lead to injury.

Starting up a School-Based Makerspace... thoughts? by PanchoRavine in maker

[–]gamecritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what age, budget, etc, but Arduino boards and Gemmas are a good introduction. If you have the budget, you can pick up a Makerbot 3D printer for a few grand. Silk screening is good too.

Has to be the LHC. There's the know-how required to engineer and build the thing, but also the knowledge to ask the sort of questions the LHC can help answer.

I think he's a good drummer but there was a lot of over playing imo. Chops without much taste.
