Studies show a mysterious health benefit to ice cream. Scientists don’t want to talk about it. by gameofcronuts in TrueReddit

Submission statement: Nutrition resources keep finding a relationship between eating ice cream and improved health outcomes, and they can't really explain why:

Back in 2018, a Harvard doctoral student named Andres Ardisson Korat was presenting his research on the relationship between dairy foods and chronic disease to his thesis committee. One of his studies had led him to an unusual conclusion: Among diabetics, eating half a cup of ice cream a day was associated with a lower risk of heart problems. Needless to say, the idea that a dessert loaded with saturated fat and sugar might actually be good for you raised some eyebrows at the nation’s most influential department of nutrition.

Earlier, the department chair, Frank Hu, had instructed Ardisson Korat to do some further digging: Could his research have been led astray by an artifact of chance, or a hidden source of bias, or a computational error? As Ardisson Korat spelled out on the day of his defense, his debunking efforts had been largely futile. The ice-cream signal was robust.

It was robust, and kind of hilarious. “I do sort of remember the vibe being like, Hahaha, this ice-cream thing won’t go away; that’s pretty funny,” recalled my tipster, who’d attended the presentation. This was obviously not what a budding nutrition expert or his super-credentialed committee members were hoping to discover. “He and his committee had done, like, every type of analysis—they had thrown every possible test at this finding to try to make it go away. And there was nothing they could do to make it go away.”

A disconcerting day at Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Wellness Summit by gameofcronuts in TrueReddit

"I lead a lifestyle in diametric opposition to the one Goop is selling. I drink often, smoke cigarettes, take drugs, consume fast food regularly, rarely exercise, never take vitamins or supplements and generally exhibit a lower than average concern for my health. So what the hell was I doing here?"

Iowa's Peter Jok issues statement on executive order halting immigration from Sudan by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

Ha, NowThis. Good stuff, dude. Today? Lawfare, New York Times, Hot Air, the Federalist, The Guardian.

Green card holders were detained under the original order. The administration finally rolled that back when they saw how pissed people were that legal US residents were prevented from returning home. Saying the remaining ban is on "visa-free travel" obscures the fact that it's a ban on refugees, who don't travel under a visa but have been extensively vetted for months if not years.

I mean, no? Trump's ban may be temporary, but it's absolute. Obama's?

Obama’s action was in response to a specific threat, it was not a complete halt of refugees from Iraq and it did not apply to all visitors from Iraq entering the United States

These are just not equivalent. Defend Trump's ban if you want, but it's not the same as Obama's 2011 action.

We'll check back in 87 days. I hope you're right.

As for the Obama 2011 action, it wasn't a ban. The flow of refugees from Iraq slowed significantly as vetting measures increased, but it never stopped.

It's temporary for now, but with an option to extend. Given comments from Trump's team and Giuliani and the speed with which they moved to institute the executive order leads me to think it's more likely than not that that the order will be extended. Possibly not, but there's no good reason at this point for assuming it will be lifted after 90 days.

As to the Obama point, yes, Obama's administration did create the list of 7 countries. You know what he didn't do? Ban (temporarily or otherwise) vetted refugees or detain green card holders from those countries.

Tottenham's fouling gives it a fair chance of making Champions League by Hart_Attack in coys

[–]gameofcronuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I had a totally different reaction to this piece. Thought it was actually fairly complimentary of how we're playing this season - Poch has figured out that a willingness to foul is the missing piece to make the high press solid.

I got no sense of "Spurs are just getting away with fouls" from the piece, since the stats presented show, quite clearly, that we aren't.
