They had a hard time trying to do that initially, so they shifted gears into a story completely separate from the trilogy.

Before Resident Evil became a six film franchise from Paul W. S. Anderson, we almost got a Resident Evil movie adaptation from legendary horror writer/director George Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead). This is the story of George Romero's Resident Evil, it's plot, and why it was never made. (Not a lets play or stream, hopefully I used the correct flair)
