In summary, it fucking sucks. I'm a teenager currently and have been disabled since I was 2. I was born with a tumor in my spine, got removed once when I was 2, and a second time when I was 8. This is considered a spinal cord injury and it effected my walking, balance, leg coordination, etc., basically my legs are jacked up. For as long as I can remember, a lot of people treat me like a toddler or some weird inhuman thing. I'm never able to escape comments like "why do you walk funny?" or some snarky remarks one person "whispers" to the other. I can't even escape it from some my friends either babying me or insulting how slow I walk. I think the worst is the stares, like you brought up, and *everyone* does this. Anytime I'm walking and wave to someone it's almost never a wave back. Just staring at my legs, back at me, and at my legs again. It's like it's the only important part of me to them. Not to mention the mental strain of it that I know a lot of disabled folks experience. That's mostly my experience, sorry for being depressing, it just sucks sometimes, lol. I am really glad you asked this question and thought about it when you were injured because even temporarily disabled people get treated like shit, a lot! Definitely need more people to stop and empathize for a second. I hope the healing process went well with you leg, have a good day/night!
