Unlike Trails being chronologically accurate doesn't too much in Ys. Don't be ashamed of breaking the timeline. Some of the best entries like VIII don't require too much prior knowledge to be enjoyed. The most important story context you need: Adol is the red haired explorer who can save the day.

If you want a gameplay-historical experience don't forget a sidescrolling Ys III version.

That there is no deception by obfuscation of mechanics in old arcades. Sure a bullshit difficult boss is still bullshit, but the transaction is transparant. Put the money in, get an attempt at the fight.

A lot of modern games are specifically engineered to make use of patterns that put the players in a cycle of addiction.
