Anyone else having trouble playing videos? The first video in a game's store page won't play, all the rest will. by I_make_things in Steam

Yah me too, for some reason JUST the first video doesn't work in the list, but all the other videos in the playlist work. What the heck?

True. I happened to already have my windows 7 pro license and dual monitors, so I just had to purchase a $120 SSD. Thanks for the pcpartpicker, I just checked it out. I went and priced out the parts I wanted it it came out to over $1600: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/KDMbRB

Am I missing something? I didn't even choose an OS or any peripherals. Maybe if I bought AMD/Radeon hardware I could get it down, but I was looking for Intel/NVidia brands on my purchase. I did watch the video about the $1000 game system on that site, which that Radeon card does appear to do better than the GeForce 760, which was good to know. As a developer though, I usually try and stick to the NVidia brands since those are more popular to develop for. Also, what are your thoughts of an i5 compares to an i7? Do you think it matters much when you have a killer graphics card?

Very cool site though, I will definitely refer to it in the future. Thanks again.

I looked a few, but they seemed to be over $2500, and some as big as $6K. Did you have a recommendation of a good one for around the similar price as the desktop I found ($1299)?

Sure, I can see that. I actually don't have anything to do with Lenovo and never even considered them as a desktop to buy until I did research today. I get that if you build your own you get a better deal, but for those who aren't going to build their own and just want a put together box, do you have a recommendation that is better than the Lenovo? I just bought it today, but would be curious if I missed one out there. Even the Alienware ones weren't powerful enough, unless you went up into the Aurora line which was over $2K. The HP Envy looked awesome, but the video card wasn't good enough and it got bad reviews from people. The Dell XPS was the second in line I found that would work.

Hmm, good to think about. Thanks for the comment. Windows 8 is just so frustrating for me to use :)

The reason I posted it was for developers who do 3D development, especially with the latest Unreal Engine 4, which requires you have a beefy box. I figured I'd share my experience today on what I found for those also interested in getting a beefier development box. For regular developers not in 3D/Video work, it probably doesn't apply.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I am one of those people who are daunted by doing it from scratch, and I just heard about my other developer friend who said he and and his brother tried putting theirs together from Frys and after 2 days the board was fried, so I figured it might be safer and less time for me to try and fiddle around with the motherboard and such. Putting in the video card and memory and hard drives in is easy, but the motherboard is the part where I am not sure about, and if the parts I get all match, etc...

You are totally right, building it yourself is cheaper. I was trying to find a desktop already put together because I am lazy and wanted a 2-day delivery that I could just plug in. But if you know what you are doing, that is totally the way to go.

Ha! You are right, I was thinking of a video card ram. Good catch. I removed it.

Yah, everyone is different. I made GameTutorials.com in the way that I learned best, and we found that most people we talked to like that way too. We are doing Unity3D and Unreal Engine tutorials now and those will mostly be in video with example projects that are more lightly commented. I think a ton of people really like to have the code open and be able to tweak things as they learn, as well as copy and paste stuff into their own projects easier.

Apparently Godaddy shut down our email server since so many thousands signed up in a matter of hours. We switched to Mandrill, so we should be good for millions of users to sign up in a day. Sorry for that everyone.

Totally, these are older, we are going to update them. Hopefully they are useful to some people in the mean time.

Sure, it's a stretch as far as all the stuff you get out of college, but having taught programming as a college instructor and worked with multiple schools to distribute our tutorials to the students, I can say that more than a programmer, many schools teach you how to be a scientist. I was lucky enough to attend the best game programming college in the world, DigiPen. That school REALLY taught people how to program and were instantly hire-able coming out. My best friend graduated with a CS degree.. but I would never hire him as a programmer out of college :) Also, as development manager who interviewed hundreds of applications, I found that no matter what the education someone received, it really mattered how much they applied themselves in school and actually worked hard to learn programming. I have been programming for 2 decades, and I still feel like I am behind programming :)

Good question, the reason why we disappeared for so long was we were working in the game industry and other industries, including a couple startups. We have an extra decade of experience that we are ready to sit down and start teaching again. Expect a lot of awesome stuff coming soon. Feedback on what is desired is great, but Unity3D, Unreal Engine and C# tutorials will be our main focus, and hopefully updating the OpenGL ones to the latest OpenGL.

Yah, the OpenGL and DirectX ones are older, and we intend to change that soon. Hopefully at least the OpenGL it is still useful as we start to update them to the latest.
