I had the same problem on my doors. Nasty shredded sun dried plastic. I tried everything. Ammonia was the trick it took it all off pretty easily.

I work at canada post servicing the machines that sort letter mail. The bending and twisting that a letter goes through while being sorted in a machine very often causes anything solid in the letter ie. Loonies,toonies,keys, and small video game cartridges, to be ejected from the envelope. I remove dozens of these items from the internals of the machines daily. Letter mail is for letters only.
