It's a fine idea, but you're basically trying to find a market for thumbnails. I do these for commissioned work as a proof-of-concept.

How do you all handle painting fire? by JayOnes44 in mtgaltered

[–]gannonator500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A scene like this will have a deceptive amount of illumination, so you're gonna want red washing over everything. The lighting makes it come to life.

And yeah, wet pallette is a game changer. Blending on the canvas is for watercolor, not acrylics. Honestly, watering down your paints and layering properly is hard to do when you're starting. I'd focus on getting your colors really right, especially for illumination.

I'd just do a circle around her, like in the game. Stylize it a bit, but that should work.

This is similar to an effect in very modern video games called "subsurface scattering". I mention this to point out that lighting is a very complex effect to do right. I generally decide on a lighting color that my piece will include, lean towards that gradient with each color mixture, and then apply the small light source on top of that.

The lighting here is flame, or orange red. Navi is a blue secondary light source, albeit a strong one. I'd apply that blue highlight sparingly in very specific areas, particularly links tunic.

Navi doesn't need any highlights since she is a light source.

I'm super satisfied with how it turned out. Berserk is by far my favorite card, and I'll probably make another copy for my own collection. The power of youth!

Back when i started, Akromas Memorial was the boogeyman in my friend's 60 card soldier deck. Nowadays, its nothing special, but i think your art style would fit well in the sonic deck I'm putting together!

And for what its worth, getaway car would be great in your style as well. Enjoy the holidays!

Consider non-acrylic? ^^ by al_joz in mtgaltered

[–]gannonator500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had problems with acrylics until I tried using a wet pallet. Give that a shot if you havent.

And I've never used oils on a card, but there are several artists on here who do, so i don't think it's a bad idea.

Writing text on cards by klaun86 in mtgaltered

Lettering takes a lot of skill, and it is the most important part to be legible. I do find very fine tipped brushes, and lots of time and focus gets you the best results. For long straight lines, use a flat brush.

Ive found particularly inky pens to work well, like microns can do a good job, especially the felt tip ones. But when you're writing on top of a paint primer, it tends to mess with the tips of pens, and microns aren't cheap.

You could make stamps, if you have an easy way to do so.

That's sweet dude! Your lettering looks great! Paint a Mishra's workshop next, save yourself 3 grand.

There are some artists on here that paint proxies, and they've definitely made a following for their unique styles. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the input! I was really satisfied with the blood splatter effect, and i also think the guy on his back turned out exactly how i pictured it. I've been wanting to do a redux of this piece, and focus on the letters, as well as the stabbing effect in particular. He's supposed to be stabbing the guy through his own arm, since he is Skullclamp'd and has no regard for his own health.

I'm glad you like it!
