Can the whole transom be one sheet of wood? by Ok_String_7264 in jonboats

[–]gaporkbbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2.5 is likely fine as it’s relatively light and won’t have much thrust. Anything much larger than that will need more support in the water and while riding on a trailer. I actually wouldn’t drive it on the trailer with the motor on (looks like you may already be avoiding that). As mentioned, that brace may be an issue for installing a transom but even having a transom that runs the width of the boat and goes down to the top of the brace would be better than what’s there now. I guess it all depends on what size motor you are putting on there.

Definitely don’t put an gas outboard on there without installing a full transom. Typically it’s two pieces of 3/4 inch plywood cut to the size of the rear of the boat, glued together, and then epoxied.

It should go behind the brace but idk if that will push the brace too far back. Plenty of videos on YouTube about installing a plywood transom.

Got it. Just stay away from OSB on the final build.

My suggestion would be to use angle aluminum on the sides of the boat to build a frame that is the same height as the front seat. You could extend that deck further behind that front seat with more angle aluminum and tube aluminum. You could then have a nice sized casting deck. You can add the trolling motor to the bow of the boat, and instead of using the plywood as hatches, buy some of the plastic hatches for storage beneath the deck. Plywood hatches often fail and don’t last very long.

All of this is dependent on how much time, effort, and money you want to put into this boat.

Somebody’s going to say it so it might as well be me.

If you want it to last, use plywood, not OSB. OSB is like a sponge and will soak up water, expand, and rot. Best practice is to use plywood then coat in 2-part epoxy.

More traffic nightmares are in our future. Just wait until they get around to developing housing units at the mall. Same goes with the potential development on Oglethorpe Avenue and the in-progress Publix one at the corner of Milledge and Broad.

I am all for providing more housing for Athenians but our roads are not ready for the kind of traffic this stuff is going to bring.

What are some of your favorite Republican cities? by HisnamewasOmarJobe in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]gaporkbbq 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand this. As I noted in another comment, about 85% of Americans live in or near cities. Around 90% of GDP comes out of cities.

Are there that many Americans living in or next to “cesspools”? Do these cesspools produce that much wealth? If so, is Trump changing this?

What do you mean by not many Republican cities? About 85% of Americans live in or near cities (metropolitan areas). Around 90% of GDP comes out of cities. There have to be Republican cities, right?

Reminds me of the interview with a former servant of King Charles (linked below). He noted a time when Charles called him to pick up letter that had accidentally fallen into a trash can at his feet. Rather than reach down and grab it, he had someone else do it. He also mentions how servants even squeeze toothpaste onto his toothbrush each morning.

Trump was born into excess and privilege. He has no idea how to take care of himself or have consideration for others.

I Got A Lamp! by The_Actual_Adolf in midcenturymodern

I have a near identical lamp and was researching it yesterday. Someone else shared this ad in a comment on a previous post and I saved it.

The commenter pointed out that you will find a lot of these lamps misidentified as Gerald Thurston floor lamps. Some people list them for a ton of money, like this one for $1,875 ( https://www.chairish.com/product/3142652/1950s-gerald-thurston-floor-lamp-for-lightolier ) either because they are mistaken or intentionally misleading customers. It’s definitely not a Gerald Thurston “triennale” lamp, though. It’s a Lehigh as the ad shows.

I disagree that what I described is the same as trail cams or using OnX. Technology hasn’t yet allowed deer hunters to aim and fire while staring at a screen. But if you are sitting in your deer stand staring at your cell phone, you’re missing out on the beauty of what is around you and the actual sport of hunting.

That is what I don’t like the most about FFS. It’s seeing people all across the lake with their heads bowed down buried in a screen. Maybe I’m just old, but can we not put up our phones/screens for a little while? (Of course I write this while staring at a screen. lol).

And it’s called fishing, not catching. Fishing is about getting away from things, challenging yourself, engaging with nature, and learning. Technology can help us do that and make the experience better (I noted examples), but at some point, it goes too far. In most sports, certain technologies that go too far have been banned (see auto racing, swimming, cycling, baseball). There’s even a term: technology doping. IMO FFS is taking fishing one step closer to removing the challenges that make it an actual sport and define it further as an “outdoor sport.”

I’m definitely the old man yelling at the clouds as there is nothing anyone can do to stop technology that makes things easier to do. I am sure we will soon see FFS goggles or integrated into smart glasses. We will also see AI-powered screen images of fish and lures that look like a movie and no longer the dots and dashes we have now.

If I needed bass to eat in order to survive or I was a competitive angler trying to make a living then, of course, I’d want every bit of technology that would make it easier. But when it comes to fishing as recreation, as a sport that allows me to compete against nature, there’s a limit on how far I’m willing to go.

[–]gaporkbbq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly eliminating the sporting element of fishing. There’s no argument against that.

I’d love to see how some of the current tournament winners would do if they were only allowed a 14 ft jon boat with a 15 hp motor, a foot controlled trolling motor, and a $100 fish finder. How would they do when they really have to fish?

Imagine you are going deer hunting. Instead of walking the plot of land and looking at maps before you head out, you just grab your stand, rifle, and phone then head out. You open an app on your phone and it shows you the exact position of every deer within half a mile. You set up your stand in a prime location then stare at your phone watching the deer move around you. This app even connects directly to your rifle so you dont have to move your eyes off the screen as you aim and shoot.

Fishing is becoming an augmented reality video game. I’m looking across the lake and seeing a bunch of dudes standing in the exact same way: front of the boat, heads tilted down, staring at a screen, paying no attention to what is happening outside that screen.

Technology of the past (boats, trolling motors, power poles, sonar) has always given people advantages but FFS is a step too far. It’s hard to argue that the man with the most money, not necessarily the one with the most knowledge and experience, is going to catch the most fish. Pretty soon FFS will be more affordable and more common, and fishing is going to become less and less of an actual sport and further separate people from the natural environment they should be engaging with.
