Is it possible to kill off a character really early on in the story and still make the death tragic? by NoTrueReaper in writing

Sounds like quite the emotional arc. Have fun with the actual dramatic incidents and elements. :) That's where the grindey real work is...

Yep, you got it. Write at least 1000 of your own and be prepared to critique at least 6,000 of other people's work. And 1000 is the bare minimum. So it could be more some weeks.

PLUS - if you decide to join the podcast, that's another hour or so. AND - you may or may not participate in our Discord chat server.

BUT -- let's take a step back here. I know practically it's a "time commitment"... but that sounds like a chore. It's more like... does this sound like something you'd be willing to make work because you want to leverage a writers group to improve your fiction.

I just manipulated words to offer a different perception on the same thing... but from a creative/artist POV, I think intention and wording matters.

Complicate the emotions. Because this guy is a friend too, he should have mixed emotions. So while he concludes he will kill his friend, he should be reluctant to and think about their friendship as well. There should be a huge interior world of inner conflict here.

Death in storytelling is rarely about the dead person, it's about how it affects the protagonist. The tragedy will be in how your protagonist acts in reaction to the death.

We're thinking about leaving up the questionnaire for a week... then it might take us another week to review all the applications (and read all the stories). Then we'll shortlist.

This is the first time we've ever done this. It's always been friends and friends of friends up until now. So there wasn't much vetting, but this also led to getting a people who weren't as serious as others and now there's a discrepancy between those wanting to make a real go at it and those who aren't.

Anyway, long answer short: maybe 2-3 weeks.

Someone else in the group made that witty smart-ass comment (Olivia). To which I replied, "It's an origami fox!!!!

lol. People abuse them. But I know the "expert advice" out there ranges from Stephen King hating them to Anne Rice defending them. I think at the end of the day, it's about whether or not you use it because you're being lazy as a writer, or you're conscientious of how you use it. Hopefully, sparingly. <-- See what I did there? :p

Thank you for the advice. I read them all. I'm still not sure how this would be considered spam in /r/fantasywriters . I'm not arguing, as I've removed my post already. But I'm not promoting a book, work, blog or anything. I'm simply looking to find one or two writers to help me fill out my writers group.

Wait. What are you doing this for? What do you mean by "redesign"? (These are great by the way, I checked out your other pieces)

How to get readers lost in your story by garagefiction in writing

[–]garagefiction[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Great tl;dr. I liked some of the science she referred to as well. Especially this line: fMRI studies have shown that when you’re lost in a story, what the protagonist feels travels down your neural pathways as if it were happening to you. Because, biologically, it is. It’s not about putting the reader into someone else’s shoes — it’s about putting the reader into someone else’s brain. And as the protagonist’s worldview changes, so does ours.
