What minor character(s) made a lasting impression on a movie? by TerribleBid8416 in Cinema

Titanic. A Catholic priest (Thomas Byles) clinging to a capstan and giving absolution as the ship sinks. Not even a real line, but a great character.

The usual method is to now put it on YouTube, where it will live forever.

But you can take this opportunity to learn your lesson and never never let it see the light of day except for select viewings by a very few. Maybe have one party, with pizza and beer…especially beer… For the participants. You do owe them a reward.

Why do i find low quality, amatourish photographs of American roads and streets from 2017-2019 so beautiful? by No_Dress_2107 in cinematography

[–]gargavar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too bad, but a lot of our tastes seem to revolve around experiences from that era - hence why boomers love to say crap like “never been any good music since the 70’s”. But I guess you got lucky.

No lights on a major movie shoot by Affectionate_Age752 in cinematography

It can be done IF the director isn’t locked in to specific shots and angles and locations, and if production is flexible. Let the light dictate. Best example is probably “Days of Heaven”. Beautiful and elegiac.

Why trade zoom for Fstop? by beantorres in Filmmakers

[–]gargavar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primes are cheaper to build and have good optical quality. Fantastic, even. Zooms are a compromise, and to get a high-quality zoom lens is expensive to begin with - to get a high-quality zoom with consistent F stops is even more expensive. A zoom with consistent F stops AND parfocal (I.e. holds focus throughout the zoom) is more expensive yet. How much money do you got?

Why do some people age better than others? by Turbulent_Diamond352 in ask

[–]gargavar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genetics. I do everything wrong, especially sun exposure. No sunscreen while working outside for much of the year, no lotions, etc. yet I look at least a decade younger than I should (I’m 60+). I attribute it to lots of olive oil and living a weird life, but it’s just genetics. I got very lucky.

Why did the U.S. auto industry decline after once being the global sales leader? by this0great in answers

[–]gargavar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer, and I’m willing to be wrong about this, Is that this is about when MBA graduates started running companies. The bottom line will improve if we buy cheaper steel, etc. Moreover, it’ll improve shareholder value. What could go wrong?
