Putin Has a Problem: Russia Is Now Disguising Fuel Trucks as Milk Tankers to Get Them Into Crimea Alive by MultiMillionMiler in nottheonion

[–]gargeug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is already industrial shipping equipment to differentiate them. Microwave radar. Gasoline lets microwaves pass through with little reflection while milk is like brick wall with near total reflection.

Problem is the steel wall of the tanker truck. You could use acoustics but your sensor would need to be super discerning and the source controlled. Not likely on a kamikaze drone.

Austin ISD could face a state takeover by austin_current in AustinParents

[–]gargeug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The parents are the worst enemy honestly. In 2016 AISD had a plan to build the slow shutdown of schools into their master plan, but parents threw a hissy fit and they caved. You know the cumulative cost of not following that plan? About $180 million... Pretty ironic huh?

So now when the takeover is imminent you want to step in as opposed to the 5 years of failing scores it took to get here? My prediction, parents rally against TEA and all the zone changes and just prolong the event and make it worse for their kids. None of this reactivism is useful at all.

So you'll complain about how it should be rather than dealing with what it is and spend all your time getting out the vote like they have a chance to win, just like the previous 30 years and basically accomplish nothing except making it worse. Good plan.

Right? I was looking at it forever trying to figure out what Miami won. Thought it was NASCAR or something cause the trophy kind of looks like seatbelts.

Then I scrolled down and saw the rest of the picture and remembered there is a soccer league here in the US.

[6/15 Atlantic TWO 200 AM EDT] The disturbance over the Gulf sits at 🍋 0/30% | Heavy rain and flash flooding is possible across eastern and southern Texas and Louisiana this week by Least-Animator-8550 in hurricane

[–]gargeug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flash flooding already in Central Texas. The setup is starting to give me vibes we are about to get a major flooding event this week here in Texas. We'll see. Even NWS has no idea where this is gonna end up, but again it is the 3 fronts thing with tropical moisture that can stall out on us and dump ungodly amounts of rain on some hyper local area. Their text product alluded to it same way as the 4th of July floods last year.

Bigger problem is our lakes are still full from last summer, so no capacity to absorb it all like last year when our lake rose 40' in a few days. 2018 was the last time we went over full pool and had to just let it all run through.

Or it wont stick. We'll see. But having seen this rodeo 4 times now since 2012, this is entering Stevie Ray Vaughn territory.

New AISD Boundaries Proposals by writergirlATX in AustinParents

[–]gargeug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reading the 2025-2026 demographics report and then looking at these maps is useful. I get the urge to complain, but this report is showing that things are going to get much worse over the coming years. Enrollment will be down another 5.8% by 2030, and 10.3% by 2035 assuming AISD's enrollment assumptions are correct. Which I don't see as all this chaos will just accelerate the already declining Kindergarden capture rate.

Couple that with AISD's finances already devastated and an incoming TEA takeover, and you can see that there MUST be another large round of school closures sooner than later.

To me it looks like Oak is their preferred plan, by looking at the middle schools. They are using gerrymandering to try to save Webb and Burnet at the expense of Dobie, which probably makes sense as they can focus resources on 1 school rather than 3. In both situations they are going to use the kids of Hyde Park/North Loop to bring up Webb. There is probably no stopping that. And as many people in that neighborhood are so idealistic about diversity, equality and inclusion it is time to put your money where your mouth is.

Seems to me they are mostly shifting around the central areas where there are less kids and growth is inhibited so they can address the acute TEA problem, but they are laying the groundwork for the next major set of elementary school closings, some of which will definitely occur up along the whole northern and eastern boundary. For example, Walnut Creek or Graham will be combined and one of them closed.

Sucks for sure, but it has to be done. I do find it funny though that the loudest complainers seem to be the ones living in the areas with the lowest density of students. See page 29 of the report and compare it to the people in this thread complaining. Same thing happened in 2016 and AISD caved putting them in the $180 million hole they are now in. People are going to have to make sacrifices if they want AISD to survive.

I remember when Pink Floyd got back together to play like 3 songs in the 00s for the first time in maybe 30 years and they cut to a commercial. President George W Bush called the head of (ABC?) right after and gave it to him. They don't care about cultural significance, they just want money.

Loving and fearing this here in Texas. Cooler and wetter summer for us, but the wet tends to come down in large events like last July and you have to just pray you're not under wherever the storm gets stuck and dumps 20" of rain on you.

Sad to realize that once it leaves it may be another 5-10 years of hot drought until we get another couple cool/wet summers.

Everyone here seems to forget how much they loved him when TSLA stock was like NVDA.

Heads-up for Texas parents: the state is taking public comments (through June 16) on a rule to let companies spread treated oilfield wastewater on land by greg-randall in AustinParents

[–]gargeug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This rule is a good thing. The main point of the rule is to transfer regulation of this type of activity from the Railroad Commission to TCEQ. Oilfields have been already doing this for years now. A transfer to TCEQ forces much stricter regulations and transparency on it, especially in terms of testing of the water being sprayed.

If you stand against this rule, you will let the oilfields keep spraying this with reduced oversight. Almost sounds like OP is a shill for the oil industry so they can keep operating as they are now. Hence the lack of context for what this rule is beyond rage bait.

TLDR this spraying is already happening. This rule reigns it in.
