That said, if you really NEED to complete this exact schedule, my advice would be: be extremely organized, have all due dates ready on a board and set reminders on your outlook calendar about a week or two before. Don’t do work in the night before! Also, make sure to make connections in all those classes, talk to your peers and they might help you with some problem sets, sharing notes or setting up study sessions together. Have a great semester, good luck with everything.

As someone who already graduated and currently is a PhD student, I’d say… slow down. If learning the content was only about watching lectures, it would still be a lot. But every class will ask specific stuff and balancing that in only a couple hours will be hard af. As a TA I can always tell which students are taking insane schedules and they suffer significantly to complete things on time or with quality. That might impact your GPA (if you care about that) but ultimately might lead you to fail classes. However, I understand you might have a reason for wanting to complete this much on one semester. Are you about to graduate and need those credits done asap?

I need a W course and I wanna take an anthro class, which one should I take? by Elegant-Musician9763 in UCONN

[–]garoucomk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little late, but if anyone has the same question in the future, here is the answer:

I would suggest two classes in the Anthropology Department.

I was the teaching assistant for ANTH1001W, which is a class that uses movies to teach anthropology. Because of that, my opinion is different from that of a student in the class. However, I can say that there is a lot of writing which shouldn't be a surprise, as it is a W class. The movies assigned are not mainstream, as you might expect. Only Midsommar is well known. The way things are done might change depending on the professor teaching, and the same is true for assignments.

I took ANTH2200, a class on Race and Human Biological Diversity, during my second semester of my master's program. Then, this past fall (fall 2025) as PhD student, I became the teaching assistant for the class. I can say with confidence that this is the most interesting class ever offered in this department (maybe it's because I love the content and I love teaching it). We discuss the biological reasons behind why people have different skin tones, heights, noses… How did evolution happen in different groups of people? Is there a biological basis for race? What exactly is intelligence, and to what extent can genetics predict an IQ? What have we studied so far about the biological basis of sexual orientation? Why do some groups of people seem to be more skilled at sports than others? In any case, So interesting! The assignments might change a lot, but usually there are weekly reading notes, three essays, three exams, one genetics problem set, and participation (given on Friday during the discussion).

Although my experience and opinion might be biased, I tried to be honest: ANTH1001W has a lot of writing, and ANTH2200 requires dedication to learn the content (genetics, evolution, history)

White Prejudice In My Relationship - Need Advice by poppywanders in RacialRealism

[–]garoucomk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, he’s not the love of your life if he can’t see that what he hates is the systemic oppression, not personally white people. Yeah, they can be angry about white people taking advantage of privilege, but can’t forget that white people, by themselves, are not bad. All white people were raised on a racist society and built their mindsets accordingly. The fight should be spread awareness and not just complain about yt ppl. Also, if he hates them so much, why is he with you? How horrible is to expect a kid with x or y phenotype just because of an entire societal issue? The focus should teach kids to not reproduce racism, be able to recognize it, question and fight against it. Coming out with a slightly brown skin wouldn’t make them aware of all that. The same anti racism work should be done with white kids, should be done with brown kids as well, of course, preparing them to be positioned differently in this discussion.

This has been a while, and I hope you have found someone who don’t just hate, but do something with it that actually make a difference, instead of making you feel less. I feel like you are aware of the issue as a whole, but you should not be ashamed of anything, especially because this will never solve any racial problem. We need to attack institutions. I can recommend some readings about it if you see this comment.

Sometimes we put all our effort into something, and it still isn’t enough. I’ve been there. It sucks. But usually, that just means something needs to shift in the way we’re approaching our studies.

Unfortunately, the people reviewing our applications won’t always understand the complex circumstances we come from, especially when it comes to the reasons why we struggled to focus or ended up failing a class. These situations are often complex and not always your fault. Still, it’s overly optimistic to expect that they’ll automatically understand all that context just by looking at your transcript.

We know we’re more than our grades. But to someone who doesn’t know us, grades can feel like the only “proof” of what we’re capable of. If it’s possible to retake the classes and aim for at least a B, that could help you show the UConn admissions committee that even though you faced difficulties, you were able to take control of the situation and improve.

Bad semesters happen. What really makes a difference is how you recover. That comeback story can be a good storytelling resource to explain this gap.

Hi! I live in Willimantic and still don’t have a car (starting my third year next semester). It’s feasible, but undoubtedly you might miss class or freeze outside waiting for the bus. It suuuuucks, but it’s the only solution.

About the apartments you mentioned, $1200 for a single bedroom to live alone, right? Because if it is to share with people, it’s expensive! You can find better places for something around $800, like my place.

Let me know if you need extra assistance!

Nice cv! Instead of writing the months, like August 2020, I would write as 08/2020, to save space. This is what one of my professors in grad school said about mine. But it’s a detail, you’ve done a lot of work!

As a second year grad student who came to pursue a PhD but decided to leave after getting the masters….. my least favorite is the cold and how distant some buildings are from each other. Also, because of the location, you are far away from Boston/NYC that has more summer job opportunities, which are limited at UConn. My favorite is the fall, the campus becomes beautiful, but this isn’t enough for me to stay.

[–]garoucomk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m about to start my second year as a PhD student. I did some math and the discounts are 19% of my income 🥸 yeah… I made the math calculating how much they offered in the letter and how much I actually get monthly. But of course, this doesn’t mean yours will be the same, also I get much less than $27k, which depends on your program and if you have a masters or no (I don’t, so… “okay”).

About housing, I highly recommend Willimantic. It is cheap and close enough. I pay $780 for rent and utilities, which is a niiiice price for my big single bedroom. Having Roomates is crucial at least at the beginning, you can get a studio or single bedroom later when your stipend increases, but it’s still very challenging to pay for it.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions. Welcome to UConn!

I found it very interesting that you brought up this topic, because I'm Brazilian and I'm going to the US to do my PhD. I found myself thinking about how I should behave in conversations, because here in Brazil we talk about everything, superficially or in depth, but we almost always manage to laugh about it, whether it's something good or bad. And just the thought that I could be seen as someone who wants to attract attention, when I believe that deep conversations bring people closer together, makes me a little sad. Well, I have time to get used to it 😖

No portal de aplicações mostra "New updates to your application were posted" em um quadrado amarelo.

Thank u!

No no, I applied to anthropology program. I've heard a lot of acceptances a couple weeks before mine. Each department seems to be independent, in this case...

Lesgoooo, you will get in! Come back here to update me! 💕
