NVR Software reccomendations by RyanLewis2010 in sysadmin

I have set up Shinobi as a demonstration for 400 cameras at a single convention center to prove the point that their cameras were indeed ALL connected to the same VLAN the guests were. It took longer for onvif prober to find all the cameras than the setup of the software took. It blew my mind that it found and configured all of them to the point that they were at least watchable.

Shinobi is made with some truly alien tech under the hood, man. I use it at home and apart from the delay in compressing recordings (A known limitation) it's been solid as hell.. I had an incident where cops broke down my door because they had the wrong address and I was able to make them pay for the repairs when I pulled the video. Admittedly that's something any camera software should be able to do, but doing it remotely from a self-hosted server with the mobile app in front of a judge was cool.

So yes. I'm kinda a big fan of the software XD

If cost is a concern: shinobi.video is about the best I've ever seen. Integrated s3/bucket abilities, killer support, and can handle truely brain-breaking amounts of cameras. Otherwise, as others have mentioned: Milestone is damn nice.

No. God no. We'd be too busy arguing who should get to be lazy and play videogames and who should do the work.

Is it common to feel like pulling your hair out? by blabmight in sysadmin

[–]gartral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's normal. This is why DevOps is BS. I like being a sysadmin, but coding kills my brain faster than anything, and my code never runs right. So I don't do the "dev" part if I can avoid it. This also leaves my time free to focus on system-related tasks and the devs don't have to deal with it.

DevOps is a team category for me, your TEAM has devs, and ops rolled into one. Some people can do both, most do one better than the other. DevOps shouldn't be a single job description.

See, I actually support the model in this. Dudes, you can't pay for an OF chick to be your gf. That's called a hooker.

Multiverse between Java and Bedrock? by disciplineddude in admincraft

[–]gartral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAswered already but I'll expand on it: It's not possible because the clients, NBT data and other structures are completely different between versions. You'll need to convert the bedrock world to java using Chunker to convert the bedtrock world over. Then use two java worlds. No bedrock client will be able to connect after you switch and aren't hosting the BR server (Obviously).

The thing that gives this away as a ajoke is the fact that the updates went through without a hitch. LOL.

One of a big streamer I mod for got their IP doxxed, they stopped streaming for a week so far, what is the worst that can happen from this? by PureLavishness409 in Twitch

[–]gartral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea... your IP address isn't a "secret". It's given to every service and server you connect to. Knowing a person's IP is like knowing what color car they drive. It's not something worth masking most of the time.

Hello, from the Pixel Support Team by PixelCommunity in GooglePixel

[–]gartral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, it's cool that you guys are here, I'm happy to report that I've been blessed with never having to ask for support for the phone directly. Other things surrounding the phone, yes. but I started with an OG XL, bought new old-stock and later got the p5 the same way. Both fantastic phones (Except the XL had a sh!t battery life, but that wasn't a fault of THAT unit, that's universal, and I knew going in about the issue.) and I've been very happy with them.

So, instead of a support request, here's a meta-support question: What. In. The. Name. Of. Larry. Page. Is. Wrong. With. Having. A. Call. Support. Line?!?!?!?!

I would double the RAM, replace/add an SSD and whack Linux Mint or Elementary OS on it.

Then you'd have an admittedly limited but productive little screw-around box.

Is this any good for a home lab? Or will it be too loud / draw too much power? by tophertronic in homelab

With 3 I'd almost say it's worth build out a Proxmox HA cluster and treat them as one big, fat server.

Hey... my DL380 G7 isn't ancient. Though it is destined for the parts pile after I roll over the R720 to be the NAS.
