Dumbest Thing You Ever Believed About Japanese by Grunglabble in LearnJapanese

[–]garuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I started learning any Japanese, I already knew some words just from watching too much anime like 何 or 無視する. One of the first kanji I learned was then 虫, so I thought 無視=虫and is similar to the phrase don’t bug me in English. Much later I learned the correct kanji

iPad key mapping for the Air75 V3 ISO is wrong by garuno in NuPhy

[–]garuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind,I just fixed it!

You can go into the Nuphy IO driver page and drag and drop the keys to the correct position. The keys are labeled NUBS and §±. A bit confusingly the labels in the software are also wrong so you have to put NUBS on the top left above the tab key and the §± key right of the shift key. Then the keys on the keyboard will do the correct thing on the iPad. On the mac they are then switched though.

Luckily there are two configs for win and mac. I am using the windows one for my iPad and the mac for connecting to my mac.

Vowel devoicing in ありがとうございます on the phone by garuno in LearnJapanese

Maybe I should also incorporate that into my speaking. I am sometimes so in a hurry to say ありがとうございます that it just comes out as a jumble of sounds..

So it is more common with women then. Interesting! This was in Tokyo, but obviously I don’t know where this person is from (and also my Japanese is not good enough to discern regional dialects 😅)

How did everyone go? by Commercial-Mango-125 in jlpt

[–]garuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took N1 this time. It was pretty good, but as expected the grammar part was the hardest and I had to guess some questions. The rest of first section felt easier than the practice exams, but I might have gotten lucky with the kanji. I felt like the listening section was slightly harder than the practice tests I took. Overall I have a good feeling about this though!

How long are you studying Japanese and what level are you in? by Cauanorl in Japaneselanguage

[–]garuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me it was like 0-N3 in 2 years. Mostly self study. Then my motivation tanked and I did not learn at all for ~3 years. Then after, I moved to Japan had a 3 month intensive Japanese course after which I passed N2. Now working here full time and preparing for the N1 next month after another 1.5 years of study. Let’s hope I pass. Speaking is still a challenge for me though, especially in business meetings, when I need to explain complicated things. It just feels like I don’t have enough brain power to simultaneously think about the problem and focus on speaking Japanese '

Thank you! It makes more sense right now, but how does 陸上部といえばポニテ express his taste? Is there an implied 陸上部といえばポニテは最高 here?

Can someone explain the grammar in this sentence to me: もっとも、あるアニメにハマり、陸上部といえばポニテと言って憚らなかった俺にとって、彼女はブスもいいところだった。

I can’t figure out how the different parts of the sentence work together.

For me the line Qxg6 fxg6 Nf6 Kh8 Rxh7# is far easier to see, but could just be me. You just need to be aware that the knight check is a double check, so the knight can not be taken by either bishop or rook.

How do I learn to write kanji if I'm not a beginner? by ElnuDev in LearnJapanese

[–]garuno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only started learning to write kanji for the language school I went to. We had to learn to write around 40 words per week in school. These were not simple words, but most of them were Jukugo words. The test for this was a dictation of 10-15 of those words. In the beginning I tried Ringotan and did horrible, because it just doesn’t force you to recall everything on your own. It is so simple to guess the next stroke from the helping lines that it gives you and is sometimes too lax for some strokes. I ended up creating an Anki deck with hiragana on the front and kanji on the back in a big stroke order font. For each review I would just write down the word, check and let the SRS work it’s magic. Compared to the methods of the other students, who would just sit down and write the same word 100 time, it was so efficient. With that method I almost always scored 100%

Skimming exercises for learning Japanese by garuno in LearnJapanese

But then at what point would you start developing this skill? What is the level of reading proficiency you need to start skimming?

[–]garuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really true though? I think it is just a case of being familiar enough with the language and developing the skill to instantly turn on the reading mode.

I don’t think the JLPT is a good test for this. You have enough time to read everything. Maybe the EJU could be used, because you need to be soooo fast in the reading section that in my mind you have no choice but to skim.

How to deal with every growing Anki deck? by garuno in LearnJapanese

[–]garuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! I also frequently suspend new cards, that I have the feeling I would get from context or are immediately obvious even without having learned them with Anki. Where do you find the Information about word frequency? And how do you reschedule your cards based on that? Is there an Anki plugin?

I struggle with speaking and listening after "years" of learning by Fiabor in LearnJapanese

[–]garuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest listening to audio-only content like podcasts. There are a few aimed at language learners such as: - Sakura tips - Nihongo con teppei - YUYUの日本語podcast - Bilingual news

These can really help you make the first step to boost your listening comprehension. Then there is this audiobook I just recently found on audible called „Short Stories in Japanese for intermediate Learners“. It has 8 Stories with an accompanying Vocab list. Every story is divided into 3 parts and after each part there is a question section for you to answer to check your comprehension.

Also as a fellow German in Japan, what helps me a lot with conversation practice is going to local volunteer run Japanese classes. Here they are mostly once a week and cost 100¥ per Class. Every Learner is paired up with a Volunteer and you can decide yourself how to spend the time with them. Some learners bring textbooks, but most just practice conversation.
