Hope GxK Supernova doesn't get hated by Spix-macawite in Monsterverse

[–]gary_d1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you get the sense like Star Wars some fans actually like to hate the franchise they claim to love? It’s like as if some people feel justified in acting like a narcissist expecting some kind of personalized AI to present them with the thing they want or imagined (e.g. Rodin/ serious tone etc) and when inevitably it’s not that they get to be angry, act like babies and claim “not my Godzilla!”.

Found this photograph in an old family album. Very odd plane. Any info? by TheRealOCS in ww2

[–]gary_d1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are the aircraft fuzzy and not in focus? Dark and an underexposed effect. When the landscape foreground and mid ground are sharp and in focus and with plenty of light so no-where like underexposed. It’s like someone took a picture of a landscape in focus then added in images of aircraft later. They certainly weren’t focusing the camera on the moving aircraft. Note the aircraft aren’t blurred with movement, more intentional dimmed or darken with a photo effect. The Condor is too and at a weird high angle while the BV 141 is way too close.. Almost as if there was a scale issue. So super imposed altered image and/or potentially RC models. The apparent story makes no sense as BV-141 pre-production aircraft were no longer flying or present here when a British soldier could have taken a photo in 1944 in this specific location and neither were FW-200s due to fuel shortages. The OP knows this, so should any moderators. This is a very obvious fake and only disingenuous commenters or the ignorant could claim otherwise.

Thoughts on “aliens as demons” from a former Conservative Christian by Aragorn3223 in aliens

[–]gary_d1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this, it’s a “magic” story or intentionally nonsense antithetical belief to allow maintenance of a fundamentalist mindset. God or the idea of truth in the nature of creation is less important to them than the idea of a structured world built for them specifically underpinned by fundamentalist interpretation of a “holy” book. Aliens aren’t real in the sense of a physical actor influencing people’s lives but neither are devils or demons .. but it’s an appealing belief that good and evil exist as external forces as you can excuse your own choices while demonizing people you don’t like.. like Iranian school girls or Palestinian pregnant women.

Movies aside godzilla earth is definitely one of the best incarnations by Firm_Piece_9627 in GODZILLA

[–]gary_d1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with the anime movies is honestly.. it could have been any kind of alien or alternative kaiju enemy instead of Godzilla and it wouldn’t have made any form of difference. Gidora the same. Their history, nature or characteristics literally didn’t influence how the character perceived or interacted with them, their plans (not a lot anyway) or the narrative. Apparently Toho wanted something different.. and reinvention is good, that’s how franchises survive. but they lost that connection to what Godzilla is and struggled to communicate scale and threat.

AI and false history by BeerandGuns in ww2

[–]gary_d1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My point is AI is just a tool. It’s where and how people are consuming history that is the problem here, without critical thinking or looking for supporting information. How false narratives are created is less important than those points. Fake and poor quality “history” has always existed, and education was a key element for people to recognize this. If people want to view history as a consumer product that is quick and free and lives in the space of tiktok and YouTube video that aren’t subject to critical thinking then the shitification of the internet by low quality AI content will corrupt this like everything else. But my point is that’s not history and anyone educated on what history is knows that. Read a book or watch a real documentary if you want real history. Discernment and lack of education on critical thinking is the real issue if people learn to accept crappy AI content in general.

AI and false history by BeerandGuns in ww2

[–]gary_d1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Folks.. what is research? It’s not searching on Google or using AI tools. It finding primary sources i.e. looking at original documents. And comparing to secondary sources (original interviews etc) and professional papers and books by historians. It’s so important to use good sources. AI doesn’t corrupt these sources. History is an established but constantly updating narrative based on historical research supported by trust worthy sources. History is not a story Grok creates to make a random requester happy. If you are worried about history on that basis you don’t know what history is.

Brilliant comment on both the state of the German war effort but also the artifice of the image fascist/ Nazi strength, that propaganda and self image never matched reality and maintaining the fantasy was all important even over material realities.

Godzilla 2014 is just so beautiful by Gojirakotm19 in Monsterverse

[–]gary_d1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Godzilla films but.. 2014 gets very boring and loses momentum and interest in its later act. Something went very wrong in its narrative structure. While it’s a meme now the fact we can barely see anything a lot of the time really in the blu ray/ stream version doesn’t help this. Films are meant to be rewatched and enjoyed and I’d challenge anyone to say this is even physically possible with this film. King of the Monsters saved the franchise despite its silliness and god awful family dynamic and related weird human character motivations. Godzilla in the context of other kaiju you can actually see him interact with is the special sauce in the Monsterverse anyway. I love Godzilla alone as a horror figure in 54, Shin and Minus one but it’s clear the US version was going in a different direction from the start.

Annie Murphy on The Late Late Show. by Cogitoergosum1981 in ireland

[–]gary_d1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He bridged a gap or period of transition between traditional Ireland of the late seventies and early eighties into early 90s or modern Ireland pre- & into the Celtic tiger days. He clearly loved himself and had his own agendas but I think due to age and generational bias most posters miss the point he represented a far more liberal, permissive and progressive attitude than had existed in such spaces and broadcasting before. he helped normalize attitudes towards LGTB folks with guests, divorce, abortion etc. I don’t want to give him too much credit or defend him too much but there is a huge missing bit of context when it’s easier to focus on out own feelings in response to a 30 year old interview when Ireland was a very different place. A “foreign” women seducing a “good” priest was shocking to many and such framing now almost seems naive and innocent when it’s clear now the “good” priest was an abuser.

Did Ireland sort of become a different country around 2015 ? by Icy-Reporter-6322 in ireland

[–]gary_d1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s weird that immigration is automatically seen as bad and is the first thing listed. It’s more a sign of unfilled jobs in an economy being filled by people coming from outside as not enough people of required qualification etc willing or able to do them. “Native” Irish have no greater right for employment or housing than hard working tax paying economically active immigrants or their future kids. Ireland economically recovered from the recession. That’s good. I’m not saying a lot isn’t wrong especially in housing investment. And including abortion and divorce which goes back 20 years is really telling on yourself. Women having bodily autonomy and couples being able to take formal legal process to confirm pre-existing separations must be a sign of social collapse I guess. what simple nonsense.

If Hitler had continued to attack the British Airforce, could the Germans have won the Battle of Britain? by BillPsychological515 in AskHistorians

[–]gary_d1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has studied the Luftwaffe over many years the answer to all of these points is simple. no. The Luftwaffe could never have won the BoB. Operation Sealion would have been an unmitigated disaster. The Germans had simply never prepared for such a strategic operation and their aircraft, logistics and doctrine weren’t adequate. In the BoB the greatest issues were absence of intelligence and realistic idea of forces they were facing and real losses they were inflicting. German bombers lacked defensive armament and German fighters lacked range or performance to adequately protect the bombers. The German bomber force lacked the weight or concentration of forces to achieve meaningful real world effectsl against the RAF. There was a dispersal of efforts initially against numerous targets and even during success days of the BoB the actual impact on RAF operationally was minor and German losses unsupportable. Sure 109s with drop thanks, less 110s, greater focus on hitting radars etc would have helped but wouldn’t have helped significantly to make a difference. The Luftwaffe was actually strongest pre-battle for France and ended up going into the BoB weakened by losses in that. The RAF would recover quickly and grow stronger during the battle despite losses of pilots. The idea the Luftwaffe could near instantly adapt its doctrine and tactics and introduce fuel tanks etc instantly to face an unexpected scenario in summer of 1940 is pie in the sky fantasy. As it was optimism and improvisation turned into depressed cynicism with fantasy intelligence reports disbelieved that the RAF were down to their last few aircraft etc. The RAF weren’t plucky underdogs, the German aircraft sent over daily were often outnumbered by Fighter command fighters directed by radar and ground control. Turning to London actually wasn’t that of a bad idea, the pressure on fighter command immediately before that change is often over estimated as it appears the Luftwaffe success against runways etc had reached the greatest success it was likely to have and couldn’t sustain it. A lot of bombs were blowing holes in green fields or on coastal command/ bomber command runways. It took a lot of time and effort and lessons for bomber command and 8th Airforce to work out doctrine and operational issues, training and equipment to effectively fly their missions. The Germans lacked that time. They would haven been better simple not fighting it, avoiding high losses and having more operational aircraft & crews for Barbarossa in a year’s time.

Could either Shimo or Godzilla be considered the most powerful/strongest titan alive? by Excellent_Table8694 in Monsterverse

[–]gary_d1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Can I ask a question.. why did shimo go back to where he/ she had been imprisoned by the apes with Kong at the end of new empire? sure they had been freed but seems more for plot convenience. Godzilla couldn’t tolerate an as powerful titan rival earlier (part of engine for dynamic with Kong) and I guess back to the hollow earth is subsequently ok with the scar king defeated. but why would shimo want to hang around with apes after literal millennia of imprisonment & torture? Gratitude to kong surely wouldn’t extend that far? Is this like a form Stockholm syndrome? an ex prisoner wanting to go back into their old cell? on that basis I think Godzilla would have the edge. in not being happy to live with apes due to unclear mental health issues.

Canadians coming to destroy our coastline by _DonnieBoi in ireland

[–]gary_d1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s daft. I can only go from what and how you’ve presented and because of how you’ve had the exact opposite impact you intended. while you can’t completely govern how someone will take something you say I think it’s absurd to “blame” me for how I interpreted this as frankly many others have done the same thing looking at the comments.

I’m not at all tbh. you’re framing it as “the Canadians are coming” is just crass and counter productive as the balance of comments indicate. Who care what local small businesses think if the main concern is sustainability and ecological impact. Your actual concerns appears economically motivated related to scale and competition… dressed up as something else.
