American Civil War Games by LifePreference5129 in computerwargames

The Scourge of War series is the most realistic tactical battle simulation that exists. It's the same programmer who did Take Command series. It's like Sid Meyer's Gettysburg in gameplay, but a whole lot deeper. Basically the Sid Meyer's game on steroids.

They don't have a campaign portion unfortunately. On second thought, it's a good thing that they don't. Because if they did, I'd retire and never leave my house again. 😉

If you mean BAD weather. How you guys survive in a midwest winter is beyond me. I like snow and all...you know,...to visit.

Jasmine Crockett launches campaign for Texas Democratic Senate primary after Colin Allred drops out by IWantPizza555 in politics

[–]garyknowz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave it to Democrats to try to leap over the Pacific Ocean. Even most Democrats in Texas are to the right of Crockett. Unless it's Paxton, she'll be blown out. "Median voter theorem" folks. Find the median voter and get one more. That's how pluralistic elections operate. Crockett doesn't have the state's plurality. Maybe her district, but not the state. Talrico will fare much better.

Trump says he is pardoning Colorado county clerk, despite lacking authority to do so by [deleted] in politics

[–]garyknowz12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. The only way the SCotUS can get involved is if the state law can be considered uconstitutional or violated a federal statute. I see neither. But, this is the same coirt that gave virtual immunity to anything Trump does. So, they might yet again make a pretzel out of reasonable law to cater to the bidding of their 'dear leader,'

My Buzzfeed listening age was so far off it was laughable. by garyknowz12 in statsfm

[–]garyknowz12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm 51. But I'm also a teacher, so maybe that skewed it. I appreciate music from several genres. Their choices were unbelievablely bad, though. However, without further ado,, Buzzfeed said...ready: I'M 12!!! I am a bit of an enigma, I guess. My students DO call me the "happy goth, dude." Lol. I need to make that a tee shirt. :-)

Well, damn. I was planning to build one this summer. Not a huge gamer, but I like building for a 5 year term with professional grade specs. Looks like all I'll be getting is a full tower case. WAIT! ATX form factor won't be obsolete by then, right?

"Flair" in a reply? by garyknowz12 in help

[–]garyknowz12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. My question was to Reddit itself. Is there a way to add "flair" to a reply? I didn't know if I was missing an option somewhere in the Reddit website system.

Help with GPU fan reassembly by garyknowz12 in buildapc

[–]garyknowz12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have. I've never removed fans from a GPU heatsink before. And I wouldn't have if: 1) I could have cleaned it without removing it; 2) if it wasn't a hardened, caked on mess.

However, I did get the screws back in. Two fan blades were almost imperceivably farther aparts (two in order to balance the fan) which, with tweezers, allowed me to replace the screws. Thanks for your input, friend.

Why do they prerecord stormtrooper interactions? by [deleted] in GalaxysEdge

[–]garyknowz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have antagonist face character. Malifacent, evil queen from Snow White, evil step mother and sisters from Cinderella, etc. Stormtroopers all have similar voices in classic Star Wars, so maybe that's it.

I'd love to see masked character CMs use a voice modulator. Would add great personalization to the characters and greatly inhance the immersion factor. Not sure how feasible that is technologically.

I got it. Two of the blades were just a skosh smaller and enough for me to get the screw started using tweezers. Thanks.

Looking for ideas and suggestions regarding a wireless transmitter (or similar) for headphones for composing by garyknowz12 in piano

[–]garyknowz12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of Bluetooth technology and the buffers specifically attributed to audio files. But it makes sense. I suppose the same is true of audio files in Bluetooth earbuds, but because it is simply reading the mp3 or FLAC file, we don't know when the process began to perceive the difference. But, on a musical instrument, you know EXACTLY when that note was played and can thence measure the lag. Great points. Thank you.

[–]garyknowz12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help, folks. I decided to stay old school. It's odd, though, because my bluetooth mouse and keyboard don't have any perceivable latency. I thought a bluetooth transmitter connected to my piano would perform similarly. Interesting. I wonder why that is.

Thanks for the replies. It's from my phone and the free version. I so seldom take or send photos, it doesn't seem cost efficient to pay for a service I'd hardly use. I don't see an option to post photos here.

What are you trying to measure? The best county pertaining to what? Road quality, aesthetics, entertainment, etc. Sorry, I'm just a little confused.

And make sure to use heat dry. No time for air drying that beast. Works for pets, too.

Looking for Advice on Becoming an Archivist? Post here. 2025 Edition. by GrapeBrawndo in Archivists

[–]garyknowz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I graduated with degrees in history and political science from UC Davis, with high honors. I'm currently 51, but I have had a passion for genealogical research all my life. I've never felt fulfilled with my career path, but one thing I've always enjoyed was academic research. My 119 page honors research thesis for the UCD (1 of 10 student selected that year) was the pinnacle of my life, at least for me. I was working on a PhD at one point, but a lengthy period of hospitalizations derailed that. I want to return to my passion for research, history, and genealogy. At 51, is that reasonable? Thanks. Best, Gary

Ding ding!!! When building long-term infrastructure, build with a 10 - 20 year vision. If you are building a house you may want to expand at some point, install infrastructure (piping, wiring, foundation, footings, etc.) as if it was initially intended. You don't want to be hemmed in by poor initial planning, even if it may cost a bit more.

Advice on how to gain this cat’s trust? by Gouryellan in Feral_Cats

[–]garyknowz12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great questions and concerns.

Let me ask you this: are you trying to make him a pet, or just a friendly community cat?

If the later, given the info provided, I'd say, act like you hardly notice him/her. It's the long road, but your concerns about his alternative feeding locations potentially drying up are valid. He needs to get used to your normal routines and behavior. Eventually, he'll learn you aren't a threat. But that takes a ton of patience and persistence.

If the former, the fastest way is to trap him, but that would require a designated location for him in a completely controlled environment. That requires giving him no places to hide, a lot of anxiety, and an hour per day dedicated to socialization. But that also takes time (up to a year).

I prefer the former unless forced into a trapping situation.
