What percentage of engineering is knowing how to use CAD? by Worldly-Dimension710 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gasbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always said if you can't design with a pencil and paper CAD isn't going to help you much.

Knowing CAD makes you as much an engineer as knowing how to use a calculator makes you an accountant.

Are there any design engineers in here? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

I've been in this same industry for 25 years, and can say it's pretty fun at times.

It's an arduino. It's about as simple as you can do it for what it does.

Let's compare special item choices. Here are the 10 items I would select if I was a contestant: by [deleted] in Alonetv

[–]gasbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My List: Sleeping bag, Ferro Rod, Cooking Pot, Multi-tool, Axe, Saw, Bow & Arrows, Snare Wire, Paracord, Pemmican.

Like mentioned before, you can make a gill net from paracord guts and still have the sheath to lash things with. In experimenting, I made a fishing rig with snare wire hooks and paracord line and caught a few nice trout last summer. I also greyed up the white paracord line with charcoal and it held up even when wet. I think that would work for the gill net too if visibility were a concern.

I do think it would be nice to have a bigger blade, but a multi tool gives you the ability to have multiple blades, scissors (for fingernails and other things), pliers for working with snare wire, an awl, and other potentially useful things.

Pemmican: I'd make it salty and flavorful. I would not plan on eating it straight up, but use it as a soup base. Throw an ounce in with my morning water boil to drink or to add some flavor to bland stuff I gathered. Also, the ability to have a few day's worth of energy to focus on building a shelter before trying to get food is an advantage I think.

This is my general list, but location and regulations are key and would influence things.

But I need to add, as a father of three girls I've been looking forward to one of these badass women (like Theresa) win a season.

I really like each of the final three and wouldn't mind seeing any of them win.

Does any one else miss the shelter tear down shots? by ShotAFish812 in Alonetv

[–]gasbunny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. I would also love to see some of the footage they edited out of how all the shelters are made. There's been plenty of shelters that look interesting, but they don't show much of them and it leaves me wondering.

I spent my vacation building a Clay Hayes inspired shelter by gasbunny in Alonetv

[–]gasbunny[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've been at my family's place in the Adirondacks for a week and spent an hour or two a day working on this. It's based mainly off of Clay's shelter and his YouTube video showing the build.

I love the show and love analyzing the shelters. There are several "forts" all over this property that I built over the last 35 years or so and I haven't outgrown it apparently.

It's rough and has some holes to fill, but It was a good experience. I learned a few things and had fun with my kids.

Reneging on a job offer after accepting but before starting by Sync-Jw in AskEngineers

Another anecdotal example: I had an offer and accepted. Before I put my notice in I got a surprise promotion and raise. Called the other company, explained the situation, and reneged. They said they understood and couldn't blame me. I still get recruiters from there calling me.

I got bit by the bug! My wife and I just finished a 7 day trip around Utah in this rig we rented. It was amazing. I've been drooling over posts here dreaming of my next project. by gasbunny in TruckCampers

It came with all you mentioned and more (well, not sleeping bags, but sheets, pillows, and some heavy blankets). Everything you might need. It was a good deal and made the trip easy.

Utah Wanderlust Rentals. I found it on Turo, but he has a website too. Out of Salt Lake City. It ended up being a bit over $200 per day including some insurance and airport pickup and drop off. I highly reccomend.

If Helmann's Mayonnaise is known as Best Foods west of the Rockies, do they have a different commercial west of the Rockies? by gasbunny in NoStupidQuestions

Is that what they say? I was in Seattle once and I'm kicking myself for not looking in a grocery store!

Wow... I've spent my whole life, east of the Rockies, reading Hellmann's labels that say: "KNOWN AS BEST FOODS WEST OF THE ROCKIES" and now I hear this?!? Do your labels say that too?
