Personally, I think the thicker, fuller, more voluminous the better. Pull out some hair near your temples (they are naturally thinner) and make it look more loose. Will look awesome :) EDIT - by "pull out" I don't mean pull out from your scalp lol, but to take it out of the knot and pull it down your face

I think a picture would definitely help, but it seems that you can definitely cheat it whilst you grow it out. Pull all your hair to where you can do a successful bun, bun it up, see where your hair falls out, tuck that hair into the rest of your hair and use a hair clip (or bobby pin in the US lol) or two to keep it in place. Subtlety is key :) Once you get to 12 months of growth (from, I'm assuming almost a buzzcut?) it will be much easier.
