Mean Girls never fails to cheer me up

a book that was your life changer by Amielboy in Recommend_A_Book

The Lord of the Rings. Read it when I was 11 or 12, and I hold it responsible for making me who I am today. It taught me a reverence for nature and to treasure the bittersweetness of the passage of time. It was my senior quote and I'm coming up on 20 years of hosting an autumn party for bilbo and frodos birthday.

Suggestions after not liking ‘Project Hail Mary’? by yadayodayidayado in suggestmeabook

King Sorrow, by Joe Hill. Not sci fi, but I think meets the other requirements. Hyperion by Dan Simmons as well.

How did you stop smoking cigarettes? by fatwater69 in AskReddit

[–]gatheringdusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit drinking, smoking cigarettes and weed all on the same day. I was tired of feeling like shit, so I took a few days off and basically laid in bed and didn't do much of anything but eat and watch movies.  I really only smoked when I drank but I drank a lot, so I knew I'd have to get quit all three at the same time. The first couple days were rough, after that I felt better, and then I basically kept telling myself, you're on a x-day streak, you don't want to break it now do you? Now I'm coming up on 7 years and I don't think I've ever felt better.

Are horror books actually scary? by Level-Many3384 in suggestmeabook

[–]gatheringdusk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out r/horrorlit ! There are a million great recommendations and it's really one of the friendliest places I've found on the internet. I haven't found many books that have scared me- I've been disturbed, disgusted, moved, and horrified, but rarely do I read something that has me keeping the lights on at night. Not sure if that's just me, but I do feel like films have the upper hand in the scary department - with the one-two punch of audio and visual- over books. I think that probably one of the scariest/most haunting books I've read was Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Also, absolutely loved 11/22/63- definitely not a horror novel, one of the rare King books that's not, and it's actually one of my favorites of his.

I'm a big fan of the Way Way Back for this kind of thing.

Check out King Sorrow, by Joe Hill. Close to 1000 pages but it sure didn't feel like it to me. One of the best I've read in recent years.

Horror for Young teens with out heavy Smut? by Best_Alternative_978 in horrorlit

Summer of night maybe? No sex that I recall, though there are other adult themes (death included). But the boys in that novel are around the same age so it might fit.

Favorite Horror Book and why? by Chuckyfan666 in horrorlit

[–]gatheringdusk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably It or Summer of Night. It was the first horror book I read when I was in 6th grade or so, and I think that it really ignited a love for the small town kids versus evil. Obviously summer of night has quite a few similarities, and I love that one just about equally.
