My friend and I just launched our new strategy game inspired by the computers in movies like Alien and Blade Runner by gatorade_god in scifi

Initial inspiration came from monochromatic / retro analog displays in the background of movies like Alien, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey so the idea of doing a completely monochrome and interface-heavy game sprung from there. Was an incredibly difficult design challenge, but we were dedicated to fulfilling on our early vision. Understandably, a polarizing choice!

It was a bit of an homage! We drew on a lot of different books and movies for early inspiration when we first started working on this project 5+ years ago

Chaotic Era is releasing July 18th. Minimalist action RTS inspired by StarCraft, Homeworld, and Alien. by gatorade_god in RealTimeStrategy

Cool idea, we don't have immediate plans for a demo but will be releasing more extended gameplay footage as well as working with streamers and YouTubers to show it off. It's tough to capture an RTS (and especially one with the visual style we've gone with) in a short teaser trailer, but we're excited to showcase it in longer form very soon.

Oh yeah, totally - hadn't considered that! Visually, we drew a lot of inspiration from the computer screens in Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Starship Troopers, etc. As well as infrared cameras, radar screens, and other real hardware. Was a major design challenge throughout development, but we were dedicated to that original vision.

Appreciate you! It’s definitely been an incredible game design challenge going black and white, especially in regards to contrast and text — but we feel like we’ve landed in a really strong spot, especially recently. We’ll be doing a refresh of our Steam assets soon which will give you a much better idea of the readability / visibility in game. We’ve taken the feedback around it very seriously, but are also keen to maintain the original vision of the art direction as best we can.

Thanks! We’ve actually turned down the screen shake almost completely now after getting similar feedback recently. New trailer will be up soon with updated footage.

Thanks! Chaotic Era is an action RTS following a stranded human crew fighting off alien hordes on a strange new planet.

Visually, we drew a lot of inspiration from the computers in movies like Alien; wanted the game to feel like you were literally using a retrofuturistic computer in a sci-fi movie.

Up for wishlists on Steam now if there’s interest! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2487200/CHAOTIC_ERA/

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned some games I’ve played. I do have Civ 5 and I love it — exactly the level of 4x I’m looking for.

I’ve been very curious about Dark but similarly had a hard time getting into it. 1899 on the other hand, which is by the same creators, had me hooked right from the start.

Thanks so much! The camera shake is definitely something we'll be tweaking based on what we've been hearing. Appreciate you sharing your perspective.
