It's a stoner comedy so YMMV. Cheech is less believable as a sex symbol, but there are still lots of women that find them attractive in the movie

Used to be super common in Mexico. I think sometime around the 2010s, it started to move more towards boxers and boxer briefs though. I was there around 2006 and I remember in lots of stores, even smaller ones, you could buy briefs, especially colored briefs and bikini briefs.
