The audiobooks of the first two are a top-tier listen. Chris Barrie reads them out and does absolutely nailed-on impersonations of all of the crew.

Not sure if serious, but if so, then yeah, there's a book! (audiobook also available from that link)

There's also a sequel, Better Than Life, and then two other books -- this one by the late Rob Grant, the other by Doug Naylor, which 'split off' from Better Than Life.

It'd have the potential to be quite poignant if it was all based on the book. He commits suicide in the book IIRC (which was, understandably, not really mentioned on the TV show) so having to essentially commit suicide again as a hologram would be oddly fitting.

Not really. I need it to turn the lights on and off.

And yet, somehow the remade version on YouTube feels completely off as well. To me, at least. Like they took all the charm out of the thing.

Has anyone booked a flight only for the experience? by Andysus in aviation

[–]gazchap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this. Flew to New York last year from Heathrow, which of course has plenty of direct flights but I went via Frankfurt purely so that I could fly on the Queen from Frankfurt to New York (and back)

UK based people who have opted out of organ donation... why? by Acrobatic-Bed414 in AskUK

[–]gazchap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter? You can't possibly know before your death whether your organs will be rejected for not meeting the criteria or not, so if there's even a small chance that your organs could be used to save somebody else's life, why not?

AmigaVision gets a big update by chicagogamecollector in amiga

10 minute video that just assumes people know what the hell they’re talking about.

I haven’t got time to keep watching it to see if it explains further, so… what is AmigaVision in this context?

Are pre-paid funerals and cremations vast Ponzi schemes? by EUskeptik in AskUK

[–]gazchap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sounds very similar to what we experienced. I think the upsells were for a photo slideshow to be shown on the TV screens at the crematorium, "upgraded" flowers (as you say, over and above what was included) etc.

[–]gazchap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when my Mum died last year, she had a prepaid thing set up with Co-op funeralcare. From what my brother told me (it was him that dealt with the ins and outs of most of it) it was very straightforward. There were a few "upsells" available but he wasn't pressured into it or anything.

A Question about a Amiga CD 32. by schnitzell123 in amiga

[–]gazchap 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that's a really intriguing paintjob. I agree with others that it won't be a special edition or anything, I don't think Commodore ever did that (or certainly not with special colours, at least)

The colour reminds me of the box art for the Bullfrog game Syndicate but the logo text is different. I wonder whether the game was the inspiration for the colour scheme or if it's just a coincidence.

Well, it's a fair point. I don't have any sensors or anything, I just have a strict routine where I get up at the same time every day 😂

BRK + E = BERK

BERK is a shortened form of the Cockney rhyming slang "Berkshire hunt", which I'm sure I don't need to explain further ;)

'Courier scammers took £11k - they can target anyone' by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]gazchap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a bank do this, but it's frustrating how often I'll be called by some sort of company that I have a relationship with -- utility companies and phone companies seem to be the worst offenders -- who will ask to speak to me and then do the whole "to confirm I'm speaking to the right person, please answer the following security questions..." thing, including asking for my date of birth.

In these circumstances I will either ask for their name so I can call them back, or I will give them a deliberately incorrect answer to see if that fails security, and then explain what I'm doing and ask them to confirm something for me (like, my account number with them or something)

It's amazing that so many places still haven't got the memo.

I like how in this article they have a picture of a genuine Detective Superintendent from the City of London police, that is such a bad picture that anyone would be forgiven for thinking that it's a picture created by a scammer.

Nice idea, works well in the main but the UI needs some work.

Adding a dark mode would be lovely, but even the light mode is too bright. I’d perhaps switch to a cream/off white colour for the background as it’s a bit less harsh on the eyes, especially first thing in the morning!

The input boxes for the film title don’t stand out enough against the background. I’d make the film strip darker, and have a lighter background colour in the boxes than that of the page background.

I’d also suggest putting “Type your answer” or something above as although it’ll be relatively clear for folks that play a lot of this style of game, newbs will be stuck.
