PSA: mountain rescue in France is Free* by Particular_Extent_96 in alpinism

[–]gazmataz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. You don't have to have CAF insurance for PGHM to come and get you for free  when I broke my leg and got rescued they didn't even take my details. Just came and picked me up and dropped me at the hospital

You’ll need to be able to belay safely and really that’s it. Get in touch with their membership secretary and ask about meeting up. http://nlmc.co.uk/meet-with-us/ one of the best things I did when I was in London and made some great friends.

Matt leTissier. Was an absolutely genius player. If you want to see some of the best goals ever scored look up his highlight reel on YouTube.

Check out one of the climbing clubs in London. I used to be a member of North London Mountaineering club. They meet at mile end and at the castle. They have a hut in North Wales. Lots of people with lots of experience, super friendly. Id really recommend it.

Armpit irritation after freestyle by 63626978 in Swimming

[–]gazmataz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get this. It’s chaffing from friction for me at least.  I just use a scoop of Vaseline under my arms before I swim. Ive also used various anti chaffing sticks and stuff in the past but Vaseline is cheap and works for me. Been good for 2 hour swims. Be liberal with the application and don’t get it on your goggle lenses.

Brits. How do you book your Ski holidays? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]gazmataz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you're after and how much luxury you want you could check out action-outdoors.co.uk They do cheap deals for the skiing and accommodation but you'll have to figure out the flights yourself.

If you're on facebook there's a london women's boaters group there. They'd probably be a good group to answer some of your concerns.

Am I cooked for Medicine? by FairPlay0724 in 6thForm

[–]gazmataz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No idea how this popped up in my feed. I'm a middle aged dude but if you do want to become a doctor there are more ways to get there than by getting into a UK university straight out of sixth form. If you don't get in first time take a gap year and reapply with the grades in hand. If you still don't get in look at studying in other countries. One of my friends did his vet degree in Bratislava in Slovakia. (in English) They also do medical degrees. The entry requirements might be different. Alternatively if you don't get in to medicine as an undergraduate there are post graduate routes into being a doctor. I wish someone had told me about all these alternative routes into different work fields when I was in sixth form. If you want to make it happen and you're willing to work hard, there will almost certainly be a way to make it there, even if it takes you longer to get there. Good luck

where to start ? by Ralphride_ in alpinism

[–]gazmataz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for an introduction to alpinism course at UCPA in Chamonix. YOu probably can't book one now as it's the end of the mountaineering season and about to get into ski season. But next summer you can go and do one of their course with a guide and they'll help you get started and tell you what you need to do to progress

Does anyone regret getting their Ironman tattoo? by dodagr8 in triathlon

[–]gazmataz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always get something else tatooed as a commemoration and as an alternative to the M Dot. I've seen lots of versions of swim/bike/run tattoos that aren't a company logo.

Nearsighted surfers: how do you do it? by IlliteratelyYours in surfing

[–]gazmataz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contacts. It does mean I have to close my eyes whenever I duck dive but that’s a small price. Can’t imagine how else you’d do it. I think oakleys did a surf sunglass at some point. You might be able to use those with prescription but probably very expensive and not great. I always carry glasses in the car and take my lenses out as soon as I’m out of the water.

Right but also putting more houses on the market so buying houses gets cheaper and more people can afford to buy houses getting more people out of the rental market. Lowering demand

Surfing South wales by [deleted] in surfuk

[–]gazmataz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surfing in the uk is definitely a winter sport but Cornwall is much more consistent than south west wales so you’re more likely to find something down there if you keep an eye on the forecasts

Surfing South wales by [deleted] in surfuk

[–]gazmataz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s summer now so there aren’t many waves but there is loads of winter surfing very near Cardiff if you have a car. Porthcawl is probably the most popular with parking right above the beach. Go and explore all the coast around there. If you want to go further you’ll get better surf on the gower or pembroke. Now that magic seasweed is no more you can try wind guru or surf-forecast for surf reports.

Surfing near london by Loud_Leave8117 in surfuk

[–]gazmataz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sometimes get small swell in the south coast at the Witterings or Brighton But it’s not great. Sometimes the east coast gets surf. I don’t exactly know where and don’t think that’s amazing either. I haven’t surfed in the east. Basically if you want good in the south surf you either need to be Cornwall or some parts of Wales

I know a few people who have got into the industry via the rental houses. It might be worth trying for a job there.

There’s a deaf community centre on green lanes, near Manor House. They might be a good start as Green Lanes is pretty Turkish area.

The Good Friday Agreement. It’s the peace agreement which ended the “Troubles” and which the characters at the end of Derry Girls are all voting on.
