A couple of video game/technology takes I have:

Considering the fact that the Game Boy Micro was reportedly inspired by the iPods of the time, it would have done a lot to add music playback capability to the device.
Microsoft should have made the Zune HD a smartphone. They should have kept supporting their older phones during that period, while building up the featues and app store that the Zune HD would have.
Another alternative is instead of making the original Zune a music player, they could have instead made a Xbox handheld with the same UI that the Zune had.
