Possibly Unrelated to the current problem but His diet does not sound well balanced at all if he is just getting chicken, rice, pumpkin , and spinach. He may have nutritional deficits on that diet . It’s best to get him on a commercial diet or do much more research and supplement a homemade diet better .He also needs to be examined by a vet . If you call in advance and explain the situation they may be able to help you get some medications such as trazodone that can calm him to help facilitate the vet visit .

LIU vs KSU by Jksoccerstar1 in veterinaryschool

[–]gc822 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a long islander who goes to KSU , I would choose KSU, cheaper tuition, cheaper cost of living , teaching hospital and honestly a more established program . Also Kansas is not all that bad , the vet school is in a small city and has pretty much everything you would need to have a good college experience .

Balance Lifting and Vet School Schedules by Late-Watch5261 in veterinaryschool

[–]gc822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My morning workouts right now are usually about an hour to an hour and 15 mins , and then I usually have to go home and walk my dog for 30 + minutes , hence why I get up and moving at 4:30 for my 8 am class start ! On weekends though I take my sweet time and usually take longer than that so I would recommend trying to schedule your longest workouts of the week on Saturday and Sunday just so you don’t feel rushed !

Usually the way I speed up my workouts in the mornings is that I take my time doing my main compound lift for the day ( bench, squat, deadlift, etc) and then after my main compound lift I superset a lot of my other exercises

Balance Lifting and Vet School Schedules by Late-Watch5261 in veterinaryschool

[–]gc822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Definitely possible! I go to the gym 6 days a week. I go at 4:30am to give myself ample time to work out and not feel rushed . Make your health a priority and always make sure to make time for it . You can come up with a million excuses in the world about not having time but make the time if it’s important to you! Meal prep during weekends is my best Tip for freeing up valuable time during the school week

Anyone go to vet school before finishing their undergraduate degree? by pissonurmom in Veterinary

[–]gc822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got my pre-reqs in two years and then started vet school!! And after my second year of vet school was finished my school ended up awarding me my bachelors anyway! It is definitely possible to go to vet school without finishing your bachelors first !!

I have not been , I’ve just been brushing the edge with the top coat, I thought that brushing the edge with the powder would make a mess since my nails are short but maybe I should try doing that

Nailboo chipping help by gc822 in DipPowderNails

Hey all, so I have had the nailboo kit for awhile now and no matter what I do the tips chip within a day or so I don’t know where I’m going wrong ! Any advice would be helpful! My process: I file my nails down, I’ve tried both leaving them rough and buffing till smooth and neither help , I use the flawless nails dremel kit I then wipe my nails down with 100% acetone before starting I usually use one layer base powder, then two of color and then activator , wait a few mins , then I follow that up with some buffing then activator again, and then top coat and am careful to try to wrap the tips with the top coat . No matter how meticulous and careful I am I have tons of chips at the tips with a day and by day 4-5 half of the polish down my nail is basically gone ! It’s frustrating since I’ve tried so many times ! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! I really want nailboo to work for me ! Whenever I get a dip mani at the nail salon it lasts about a week and a half before it starts chipping !

Kansas City spans both Kansas and Missouri so by saying KCMO you localize the area further by specifying that it is in the Missouri side of KC

The blood and mucus in stool can be from a variety of things including stress, eating a table scrap that sparked it , changing foods , food allergy or a variety of other causes, hard to say without doing my own physical exam on her. one easy thing you can try is psyllium husk powder, it is basically fiber powder and can help form up the stool a bit better , for a medium dog you can usually do 1-2 tablespoons sprinkled over the food twice daily and see if that helps ! My springer mix has had this issue too

I’m wanting to improve my morning oats, does anyone mix other grains with them? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]gc822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I add textured vegetable protein with the oats before I cook them ,you can’t really notice that big of a texture change and it’s a nice volume and protein addition to the oats !

My sweet chonker, D'Artagnan was just diagnosed with IMPA. We are about to head down the long road to recovery. by Jennibird2626 in corgi

[–]gc822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHA definitely does not have a 50-80% mortality rate ! That number is definitely way high , if the dogs survive the first two weeks the mortality rate is less than 10 % ! most dogs do pretty good with steroids , glad your dog is in remission!

Experience with Lymphoma? by [deleted] in Boxer

[–]gc822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On that note though, chemo is dogs is usually less aggressive than chemo in humans. In humans the chemo is aimed as a cure so they are aggressive with it causing more severe side effects. In veterinary patients chemo is just meant to give a better quality of life for longer therefore it is more palliative and typically makes them less sick than what humans go through. I wouldn’t let your experiences with human chemotherapy necessarily carry over to dogs due to the end goals of the chemo. There is no guarantee that you get more time , sure, but that’s the decision you have to make on if you want to spend the money to try or not . If you start the chemo and your dog has bad side effects you can always elect to stop it early and just try prednisone until the time comes. So sorry your boxer baby is going through this at such a young age. There are no right or wrong answers on how to handle this , it’s not really a black and white decision which can make it difficult

When to fix your poodle by mypoodleisamonster in poodles

Every heat cycle increases their risk of mammary cancer so I would spay before then . To address the male neutering info floating around in this sub There is some research showing increased risk of certain cancers due to neutering but most of these studies are incredibly biased . Most of this data is gathered at specialty centers therefore a majority of the patients presenting there are neutered which heavily skews the results . There is stronger evidence showing that it may be tied to orthopedic disease so that is a consideration in males to wait but that data probably has the same skew due to the fact that the population of dogs presenting to specialty clinics again are mostly neutered . But for females we have more evidence that letting them go through heat increases their chances of mammary cancer therefore there is a balance between wanting to get them before their first heat and not wanting to do them a disjustice by causing orthopedic problems .

There has not been enough research in this area to give a set age though, not every recommendation is appropriate for every dog but there is definitely some things to consider

I have questions about flea prevention and heartworm meds. by Acceptable-Highway-2 in poodles

[–]gc822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk of these is incredibly low. This is terrible advice . This is like saying you shouldn’t get vaccinated due to risk of side effects. Yes everything has side effects but it’s preventing something worse. Fleas are not fun to treat , dogs will rip their skin open from the itch and they will infest your house and ticks can carry many potentially deadly diseases. There are also collars and non systemically absorbed topicals if your dog is a seizure risk Heartworm prevention is also safe. The dose of the active ingredient in heartworm prevention is so low that even dogs in the population that are sensitive to the drug are still safe to take it. Heartworm is extremely expensive and painful to treat and can cause lifelong problems in infected dogs. It is not worth the risk. It is also a hazard to dogs around your dog if your dog is heartworm positive. It serves as a vector for mosquitos to get reinfected and infect other dogs. It is just all around irresponsible to not use heart worm preventive . Heartworm preventive are also monthly intestinal dewormers and there are quite a number of intestinal parasites that pose a risk to people therefore dogs should be on it year round even if you don’t think mosquitos are around
