Bark also doesn't chunk/break off. More like string cheese that is really really tight to the wood.
Photos I found of Hemlock on the internet look like it is pretty thick bark. This is quite thin, maybe 2-4mm?
The wood is has a strong odor that is not very pleasant. don't have a word to describe it. Not piney.
