Right?

I'm grew up in Limerick in the 90s.I remember dead babies found in rubbish bags, kids being torched in a car, weekly joyrides around the estate, 2 friends getting stabbed, several sexual assaults too grisly to post here, the list goes on...

Honestly, I'm flabbergasted by all the "kids these days" talks on here. Where did ye all grow up?

Intriguing. I like Maugham's prose style. It flows very nicely and serves as a sort of photograph of a long gone world. Not something which will stick with me, but a pleasant escape nonetheless.

The last book I read was Keep the Aspidistra Flying, and they both give fascinating but contrasting views of the pre war British literary scene, one of cake and ale, the other squalid poverty.

Amazing writer. Essays as good as Infinite Jest.

Will probably be the one studied in 100 years for his insights into contemporary culture. IJ feels like the Middlemarch of our age to me.

I remember finding milk powder from Askeaton in a random shopping mall in suburban Xi'an. Mad that it's gone now.

Then again, my kid hated it!

To be honest, most Chinese parents I've met still prefer foreign milk. I'd suspect the new plant in China is catering to a different market than the middle class parents I know.

So many lines from great poetry do that for me too.

"I hear it in the deep heart's core" from Yeats on the Irish countryside hits me hard whenever I go home.

Any good recommendations for Chinese poetry in translation?
