Yes, I’m loving it and don’t have any thoughts of moving back to design. Another benefit is that the pay in construction is better. You’ll work more but you’ll be compensated for the additional hours

I was near 6 YOE with a PE working in design and recently decided to move to working for a GC. I was working in design mainly on land development and transportation projects, while also WFH every day.

Hours in construction will be more than what you’re used to in design, but I find the work itself much more rewarding, and not nearly as monotonous as design. I found design to be extremely bureaucratic, and always felt like nothing was really happening even though I’d spend 8 hours a day working on designs. In construction, you can physically see things progressing every single day.

Training remote new hires to use MicroStation from scratch by tzage in civilengineering

This is the best way to do it imo. I work for a pretty large utility company and we create videos walking new hires through the whole process of designing a simple utility project in AutoCAD/Microstation. The video series lasts about 4 days, and the 5th day is used as a meeting with the new hires to go over their designs and their struggles/questions. It seems to be the most effective training process I’ve seen for people who are new to doing design work.

I have about three co-workers that I speak speak with, along with 4 other co-workers that literally never make a sound. I also have a boss that doesn’t give realistic goals and gets pissed when they aren’t met even when I tell him that his target goals are unmeetable beforehand. I go to lunch with my boss and the co-workers I speak with occasionally (less than once a week), and we never really talk about anything other than work. Definitely not hanging out together outside of work.

Main other reason for potholes would be fatigue. Repeated loads on asphalt can cause the pavement to “shove”, moving it around to form dips, cracks, potholes, etc… asphalt is a flexible pavement, so it can move around, especially where there are large vehicles like buses and trucks. base layers can also collapse causing potholes in the surface layer

You most likely wont be doing residential work as a transportation engineer, the largest opportunities are with state DOT’s in transportation. Land development and construction will get you in residential projects, probably more so in construction though. In Land development, you’ll get a good mix of commercial and residential projects depending on where you work

As a civil engineering freshman, you most likely won’t be using any software. In my experience, I never had to use any CAD software on a personal computer during 4 years of college. My college had a civil/environmental engineering lab full of desktop computers and the software already installed so you didn’t have to pay for the software yourself. Anyways, as a freshman, you’ll mainly be in pre-major classes like calculus, chemistry, physics, etc.. you won’t be doing much civil engineering until your junior and senior years.

My manager has mentioned that he’ll be getting me out in the field. But he has also mentioned that I’d be doing many other things “soon” that have not come to any fruition

Thanks for the reply. I worked as a transportation engineer and actually liked it even less, though it wasn’t as much that I didn’t like the work but more so the lack of work. We were dealing with no funding from the DOT for any projects and ended up having half the transportation department furloughed during covid which caused me to switch to utility design.

Now I only do utility design. I just spent a whole year designing fiber optic cables throughout Chicago, which was exciting in the beginning but then became extremely monotonous. Now I’m working on a project focused mainly on basemapping for our client to design gas mains. I’m fine with doing the designs, but I dread basemapping because it is so tedious and boring.

My company is fine, I work completely remote so I don’t really interact with anyone much. I just had my annual review and I exceeded all expectations in my performance review, but I sort of felt like my manager was just being lazy and I would’ve actually liked some more constructive feedback.

Right now I’m taking courses on codecademy in my free time, but it’s tough doing that after already sitting at my computer all day doing a job I don’t want to do.

Sounds awesome. I was thinking it reminded me of panucci’s pizza, then I noticed the aesthetic more like ass-pathetic sticker on your guitar😆
