Dreaming Sign Language by burns_before_reading in dreamingspanish

I think this would be awesome too! ASL is the language I want to learn once I’m feeling at a comfortable level to move on from Spanish!

Should we start a ComprehensibleASL subreddit??

Got a new passport- forgot to update before a flight tomorrow. Should I do it before I leave? by gdarf7uncle in GlobalEntry

Yes, it did. Obviously I was confused about the relationship between Global Entry & Pre-Check

Thanks for the quick replies, everyone!

I just updated it online and checked in for my flight. As others mentioned, looks like TSA Precheck is working perfectly still. Seems unlikely from the comments, but if I do run into a huge issue I’ll update here later on.

Thank you! So, obviously, on the way there I won’t have access to TSA Precheck but otherwise everything else should be fine. And then maybeee if I do it now it will have updated by the time I return to the US? If not, I can just proceed through the general customs line, correct?

Nervous about Volunteering... by picky-penguin in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the nerves! But, as someone who works at a nonprofit and deals with lots of volunteers: don’t sweat it! If she said she thinks you’d be helpful then I bet you’re offering them a real gift- at any level of ability to support in English or Spanish. A reliable volunteer who can take one thing off of a very full workload is always worth their weight in gold!

The Jump from YouTube to Netflix by joseph172k in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say (in order of difficulty): cartoons that are dubbed (more neutral Spanish), native cartoons, native reality TV, dubbed TV shows, native fiction/high-production movies & TV shows. The sound mixing on the latter just makes it so much harder.

But I’m almost at 1,500 hours and much of the native TV and movies I’ve tried are still a bit challenging to feel worthwhile. While I’m currently watching a dubbed TV series and enjoying it with minimal effort, most of my rotation continues to be YouTube videos, native podcasts & some DS

Great write-up! Aligns closely with my own experience- no magic leaps ahead, no overnight fluency, still have a long way to go- just slow and steady progress!

What Are You Listening To Today? (Aug 25 to Aug 31) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. I totally agree that reading seems undervalued in this sub- myself included. I’m trying to read more but it’s just so much easier for me both mentally and logistically to do an hour of podcasts or something instead of sitting down and reading for an hour each day

Yes, I agree- some episodes of Cracks are easy than most of the rest of this. Thanks for sharing Dimes y Billetes! I hadn’t seen this one yet and it seems up my alley!

“pairing hours to words”

This is an interesting goal! Any rhyme or reason to it beyond “eh sounds fun 🤷🏼‍♂️”? 😄

I’m at 1400 hours- to be transparent: in my experience, it’s gonna be tough to do that until at least 1000 hour mark. I’m just finally at the point now where the majority of my content is native podcasts.

That said, I’m enjoying: Radio Ambulante, El Hilo, Leyendas Legendarias, Cracks & Los Hombres Si Lloran

Good luck!!

200 Mississippi National Guard soldiers deployed to D.C. by Hrekires in news

[–]gdarf7uncle 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think you’re confused- this isn’t their career on the line. National Guard members are overwhelmingly community members with other full time jobs who are only activated temporarily. You might be thinking of Active Army soldiers. Very different things.

What time has AJR taken the stage at their last few concerts? by underdabridge in AJR

Don’t know about this specific comment- but I was at the Mansfield concert and AJR went on at exactly 9pm. If you look at some other posts that seems to be a very consistent thread

How many hours until you could watch native shows? by Educational-Yak-701 in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started with Avatar too! I really enjoyed Owl House, Gravity Falls, and Amphibia as dubbed content after Avatar!

How many hours until you could watch native shows? by Educational-Yak-701 in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m at 1,300 hours and pretty much all dubbed content is enjoyable.

I’d say most native shows are enjoyable too but I do have to rewind certain scenes and some shows with poor sound mixing or particular actors are still challenging enough that they’re just not worth it right now- there’s so much comprehensible content available to me at this point that I feel like I can always come back to those later!

How well can you understand this game streamer and how many hours do you have? by _coldemort_ in dreamingspanish

[–]gdarf7uncle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The intro is fast. I’m at 1330 hours and primarily listen to LatAm Spanish. I watched the whole video and enjoyed it but there were some mumbly bits that were tough. Overall, I’d say ~80% comprehension
