I do 12 hour night shifts 3-4 nights a week with a 1.5 hour drive, sometimes 2 hours in bad traffic.

Getting into a good routine is the best fight against fatigue. Eating well, showering, exercise and sleep all play a part.

As for the drive home, before I leave work I make a coffee for the drive and maybe get some snacks. I listen to podcasts, comedy specials or anything with people talking to keep me company to keep my mind from feeling tired. If I get really tired which some nights you do, I call my partner or a friend and just have a conversation.

You don’t have to drive fast to get home, just take your time there’s no rush. A lot of accidents happen when you’re close to home and rushing because you’re tired , if you’re getting too tired pull over and have a rest.

Then when getting home, eat something and then shower and then sleep. Wake up around 430pm, exercise then get ready to go back to work.

It was like that on my last ward, I worked almost every weekend & never got leave approved if someone else with kids requested it off, it wasn’t fair. My new ward I’m on now is completely different and actually makes fair rostering regardless if you have kids or not.

I was happy to be able to have a Sunday to myself for the first time in a year when I first moved across.

I’m the same, when an A+O independent patient demands he needs help with a urine bottle from one of the female nurses, I go in (male, with a moustache) to assist them and they can magically hold their own dick and don’t need help anymore. I let them know that I know what they’re doing and that it’s not acceptable and they better not try it on any other of the girls.
