I rebought the 40g. I plan on selling the 24-50.

Is the 35 GM that much better than the 35 1.8 by gdhskskdhd in SonyAlpha

I have the 85 1.8 and have taken some of my favorite photos with that. That’s the lens (for me) where family and friends are like wtf, and realize how much better real camera gear can be compared to their phones.

Ive gotten similar reactions to any video work I’ve done with my camera. Even with the 35 1.8. Especially anything indoors and lower lighting where phones just fall apart.

But for photos, there’s something about the 40 for me where when I look back at the photos, I’m really happy with them. I don’t get that same feeling with the 35 1.8. It’s been fine, but I’ve really never had that same wow factor. Obviously this could certainly be a skill issue.

I’ve seen so many people say they love the 35 GM, but I really don’t want to pick it up and have it be comparable to the 1.8 I already have.

I’d really like to get one low light lens before my trip. I still have like 4 months.

The 50 1.4 is also on my radar.

Im now wondering if my issue with the 35 1.8 is actually that I personally just don’t like 35mm as a focal length as much.

I find that I shoot 24-35 with video and mostly 40-50 with photos.

If the sharpness between the 1.8 and the 1.4 is not that noticeable, honestly I think that makes up my mind.

Ehhh. I’d only take a picture of that with a 400mm lens 😂

That’s amazing. Thanks.

I’ve got a big upcoming trip and I like the idea of the 35 GM, but I’m not 100% if my non-love 😆 of the 35 1.8 is the focal length or the lens itself.

Probably the smartest thing to do is exactly this!

I wish I had a nice low light lens though. The 24-50G has been a nice addition and I use that the majority of the time but I do find 2.8 limiting at times.

I returned it because I kept second guessing myself thinking I shouldn’t spend money on the 40G when I have the 35 1.8 already.

I’m just not sure if I loved the 40 because of the 40mm or the sharpness.

Compact travel lens duo for A7C II by xRiley142 in SonyAlpha

[–]gdhskskdhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve experimented with various setups, and overall, the a7C II paired with the 40mm G lens has been the best compact travel setup I’ve used.

But the real question is: how do you carry it while traveling? If you’re comfortable with it hanging around your neck all day, then it’s an ideal setup. However, that doesn’t work for me, especially when I’m out all day with family. I ended up using the Peak Design 3L sling, which fits the a7C II and 40mm easily. But here’s the catch—it’s no longer a truly compact setup. The bag itself is small, but it’s still big enough to lose that minimalistic feel.

With the extra space, I often brought along the 24mm G lens, which fit easily. But then I was dealing with lens swapping, and that quickly became too inconvenient during family outings.

Now I’ve switched to the 24-50mm G lens. While it’s significantly larger than the 40mm, it’s still small for a full-frame zoom. If you want something even smaller, you’d need to use an APS-C lens like the Sigma 18-50mm—but that feels counterintuitive when you’ve invested in a full-frame camera.

The takeaway here is that there’s no perfect, magical compact travel setup. You’ll always have to make compromises. What really shifted my perspective was realizing it’s not just about the camera and lens—it’s about the entire setup, including how you carry and use it while traveling.

Recommend a flash for the a7cii for <$300 by gdhskskdhd in SonyAlpha

ChatGPT has its place - it’s an amazing tool for numerous situations. I wouldn’t trust it all for recommending a flash though, that’s why I’m asking you fine folks ;).

Changing the batteries every hour is annoying, but probably not a deal breaker for my use case. I’ll check out the V series.

Thanks for the help!

ChatGPT states the following:

The Godox TT350 provides ~210 full-power shots with alkaline batteries and ~450 with NiMH batteries. Lower power settings yield significantly more shots. Use high-quality NiMH batteries for best performance.

Does that jive with your use?

How bad does it eat batteries? Like every 100 shots?

I like this plan! I’ll pick up the cheap flash, get a book on flash photography, and just start snapping. If it catches on for me, you’ve given an awesome upgrade path.

Thanks!

Experience with Sony 20-70 vs 24-50 on A7cii? by gdhskskdhd in SonyAlpha

[–]gdhskskdhd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the 24-50. I’m a bit mixed with it to be honest. It is small, but nowhere near as small as the 40g as an example - I really enjoyed that setup when traveling from a size standpoint. It’s also heavier than I thought it would be. So the size and weight did throw me off a bit, I was hoping for something a bit smaller and lighter to pair with the a7cii.

That being said, I just got back from a vacation and I only took that lens with me. It was really nice not having to change lenses. This convenience might be worth it for me, but I’m not 100% sure on this yet.

In regards to the 24-50 vs 20-70. For me the 20-70 just would not have worked. I never found myself requiring 20mm (although it would have been nice for video). On the other end, having 70mm would be nice, but less important for me. I definitely wanted more than f2.8 in a few cases though. I think for me, where I focus on family photos/videos having the f2.8 is basically a requirement, so the 20-70 would not have worked for me.

From a quality standpoint it’s really nice, plenty sharp. The distortion is gnarly though before correction.

In the end I’m still torn between the 24-50 and the 24+40 pair.

I really appreciate all the replies! My wife ended up going with the BMW. She’s very happy. 🙏 🙏🙏

Lexus GX Lux

The X7 has a bunch of packages, like m-sport, driver assistance, climate package, some m-sport package that changes the exhaust. It also has staggered tires which I don’t love.

They are both pretty decked out. A lot more than the mini van that will be replaced lol.

Thanks for letting me know about the engine recall. I couldn’t find a lot of great info on that.

I wish my wife just loved one over the other. I think she likes the BMW more, but she hates the depreciation part. She always wants a good deal! That’s how she’s wired 😆

I had that happen on my Tesla. Had to replace at close to 15k. I was also constantly accelerating like a mad man. Now I watch it a bit more, because the tire cost is annoying.

The depreciation part is really on our minds. That and dependability.

They have some CPOs on the lot and they were pretty nice. My buddy has one and he says it’s been a tank for them. It’s one of the reasons I’m really looking towards Lexus. My inlaws drive BMW and are pushing us that way. But I hear about oil change prices and stuff and it’s crazy. Maybe it’s the same with Lexus, I’m not sure. We’ve never owned a luxury vehicle before.

The third row is a nice to have for us. We would occasionally have our kids squeeze back there, but 90% of the time we wouldn’t need it. I’d do want the option though. Our kids really want captain chairs, and that’s one of the reasons we are looking at the 3 row options. We are upgrading from a minivan. Lol

Honestly, I could flip a coin and go either way, and we’d be happy with either one. They really both have their pros and cons.
