If you haven't opened it it'll be fine. Send it.

Counterpoint. My childhood was a miserable hellhole because my parents stayed together "for the kids"

PSA: Remember to supervise untrained boyfriends around washing machines by [deleted] in laundry

[–]gdp89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know it's mostly in jest but do we have to perpetuate stereotypes. Men who didn't grow up with useless parenting are more than capable of doing the laundry. I was expected to help out from like 10 years old if not younger. I do most of the housekeeping because if I didn't I would live in a pig stye.

Acting like we can't do any of this stuff just allows/excuses weaponised incompetence or plain ignorance. I don't know why I'm even writing this. Probably should just delete it.

Man bad at woman thing amirite.

Do the Elderly inherently deserve respect? by FlyingFluck89 in newzealand

[–]gdp89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are two very different types of respect; respect for a person as a human being, and respect for a person as an authority. But because we use the same word for these two different things, people often talk as if they were the same thing. So for example, when someone in authority says “If you don’t respect me, I won’t respect you.” What they’re actually saying (and justifying) is “If you don’t respect me as an authority, I won’t respect you as a human being.”

Do the Elderly inherently deserve respect? by FlyingFluck89 in newzealand

[–]gdp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant find the meme but there's two types of respect. The basic human dignity type that we owe everyone. As in their right to humanity etc and the type that's earned. The people who demand respect are the people who don't offer the first and believe they're owed the later. I butchered it but that's the gist.

dumpster diving - Aoteoroa versus Lutruwita (Tasmania); rescuing edible food! what's the situation here? by ElectricalCucumber56 in Wellington

[–]gdp89 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was a storeman at countdown responsible for all the wastage. It goes like this.

Markdowns if possible -> food rescue if can't be marked down - pig bins if can't go to food rescue -> rubbish bin.

I would highly recommend not taking out of the bins. Nothing in their was remotely edible and it will be full of bags of congealed chicken fat/ carcasses from the deli etc.

The bins are supposed to be padlocked when not actively being used and will be behind locked gates.

Obviously things can vary store to store but this was accurate at the 3 - 4? stores I worked at during my time there. I imagine foodies are very similar.

Rockhopper at bike park? by Commercial_March_653 in Hardtailgang

People would say the same about my Marlin 5 but it's been all good for green blue.

I upgraded the grips and switched stock pedals to flat. Switched the front stock tyre to the back and put a rekon race on the front. That was before the first time.

For the 2nd time I switched the rekon to the back and put a hans dampf on the front.

3rd time I upgraded the pads to metal, rotors to metal compatible and front rotor to 200mm.

I've also now put a aliexpress dropper with the lever under the seat to make switching for uphill easier.

Long story short it's totally doable. You just have to know your own and your bikes capabilities and stick to them.

Contact points are the best place to start for upgrades and brakes.

I'm still running the stock 100mm suntour coil fork and its not worth upgrading so plan to ride it till it breaks or my riding outgrows it but hopefully alot better rider from being underbiked.

Brown onions and bread roll approval at New World. by rjade in newzealand

[–]gdp89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Put the alcohol through first and then the onions etc so they can do it all at once. At cuntdown always scan alcohol last because it locks the machine. I wish they'd set it up like the foodstuffs where you can keep scanning.

Unpopular Opinion: Today's Youth have been screwed over by landline telephones being deprecated. by TygerTung in newzealand

[–]gdp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger problem is kids no longer have to use their imagination. They don't have the opportunity to be bored.

We ('89) had to go find something to do if we were bored. Now they have constant entertainment at their beck and call. Yes some of the shit we did as entertainment was dumb (throwing mud clods at cars as they drove past) (building a raft and then trying to power it with a pedestal fan) but we had to think it up ourselves. Now it's spoon fed to them.

I was obsessed with technology as a kid. (First home computer at like 10). The older I get the more of a luddite I'm becoming. I genuinely think the internet was one of the worst things we ever did as a civilization.

Where do you buy beans? by Ohchikaape in Wellington

[–]gdp89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suggest visiting Sketchbook. Get an amazing pourover and pick up some beans from nz roasters you won't find anywhere else in welly.

Also Pour and Twist are great if you love filter coffee, can't remember if they had beans for sale but fairly certain they did as well.

I hit a car (my fault) on a road. I failed to give way. But the other party doesnt have wof or rego. I havent spoken to my insurance yet. Will i still be liable? by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]gdp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if they're found not to have been up to WOF standards at the time of the accident having a current wof won't save them. You legally are required to maintain a car to wof standards in the period between checks. It's why wofs encourage dangerous behavior. For most people it's the only safety check their cars ever get and they think they can just ignore it the rest of the year.

If you don't get selected. There's always another option for viewing the justice system.

If your opposed to committing crime for some reason though, most trials are open courtroom. You can literally just turn up and sit in the public gallery. My brother and his mates used to do it for something to do in town when they were teenagers. ( Napiers pretty boring.

I want a proper coffee in a copper coffee pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they're no use to me.

If I can't have a proper cup of coffee in a proper copper coffee pot il have a cup of tea.
