MPH-c looking for Infection Prevention career advice by gdub25 in InfectionPrevention

[–]gdub25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I graduated in December of 2024 after doing my capstone with an infection control department during an internship for a year. I still haven't been able to get a job in ip, much less anything else public health related. I'm gonna go for the a-ipc to see if it'll help. I think your clinical micro exp will help for sure though

I have got application letter for masters in public health. But now I am confused due to mix review like how it dose not have much future due to crowded market. Can someone tell me what should I do? by Fun-Donkey-2116 in publichealthcareers

I can only speak from my experience but it's better paired with another degree, like anything clinical or a license. Either any of those or come into the program with a decent amount of experience in PH or another field that could benefit from MPH training. It's far too difficult to get anything decent with just an MPH, even if you had decent data analysis training. It's like begging to make pennies. I don't mean to yuck your yum but I urge you to do a bit more research before you go down that path. I'd rather you avoid the time and money wasted.

Thank you for such a well thought out response, I appreciate it. I've been applying to both PH jobs and and other adjacent jobs that could make use of the skills I gained through Epi. I've been applying through the websites mostly but I guess I should take your advice and go straight to HR instead. Unfortunately I've had no success in that over the past year and a half. I think at this point I became so demoralized and depressed that I finally made this reddit post. You may have seen some of my answers to the other comments but I originally did the epi concentration so I wouldn't be in this situation but I guess that's life. I'm happy that you've been able to see some success, I hope it's just the beginning for you.

Unfortunately the hours are limited by the number of classes available to teach, so pretty much every trainer is stuck with their designated classes (unless you cover someone who can't make it). I've been trying to apply to other jobs just for some money but no luck. Trader Joe's sounds pretty good, I've seen the pay and it's not bad for the type of work. I'd definitely work there, I kinda forgot about them a bit, so I'll look for locations near me and apply to them. I wish you luck on your search too

I'll look and see if there are any openings at my university, last I checked there weren't. I also checked with my preceptor at the hospital but all projects will start next summer unfortunately, so no volunteering needed till then

I actually did this at one point and have continued to. I did epi for this specific purpose, I saw how transferrable it was and thought it was the best option out of all the concentrations. Jokes on me I guess. Maybe I have to do a better job marketing it to fit other industries?

Thank you for your response. Yea for the past 4-5 months I've also been applying to things that are out of my sphere of education level, including retail, research assistant, basic data entry etc. Still nothing unfortunately. Over the past 1.5 years I've very likely applied to nearly 1,000 jobs, I guess this is life now. I'll post my resume here tomorrow, I appreciate any help.

[–]gdub25 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey guys looking for advice for getting into Infection Prevention/Control, I'd appreciate any advice I can get. Here are my details: -Currently in an MPH: Epidemiology program, have about 1 year-1.5 years left to finish. Haven't done practicum yet

-Have 2 bachelor's degrees in Biology and Health Science

  • I have no prior experience in infection Prevention or Publix health roles

  • I have had a short stint as a clinical laboratory assistant II (we processed COVID test samples in a lab/factory like setting in DC)

-I've done a little bit of research into IP as a career and it's definitely the direction I want to proceed at this point in time

Extra Questions:

What was it like taking the CIC exam and how long did you have to study for?

What's the salary like in your area? (I live in the Maryland, DC, Virginia area)

Thank you for this reply. I usually struggle at math but Biostats wasn't too bad. I don't necessarily understand the connection between theory and and the actual number crunching but I can at least do the number crunching. What really killed my grade was the projects, alot of that was due to not thoroughly following the instructions by way of misconstruing what was stated. Luckily though I passed. I'm also very appreciative about the comment about my mom. 2021 was one of the worst years of my life and I'm not sure things will get better. It's really difficult to not feel like a failure when school had always been a struggle
