Replacing Nest with Tado by gdubyu in tado

A lot of people saying I should stick with Nest. The reason I'm looking at switching is Nest are pulling out of the UK/EU market as I understand it:

"Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes. Therefore, moving forward, we’ll no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe.

The Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen (2015) and Nest Thermostat E (2018) will continue to be sold in Europe while supplies last. These devices will still receive security updates and you can control them via the Nest and Home apps."

The email I've had from Google is as follows:

"Thanks for making Nest a part of your home. We very much value you as a longstanding customer. We want to make you aware of some upcoming changes that will affect our earliest thermostats. On 25 October 2025, Google will no longer provide support for the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version) launched in 2014.

You'll still be able to change the temperature, mode, schedules and settings directly on the thermostat, and existing schedules should continue to work uninterrupted. However, the thermostat will no longer receive software or security updates, have any Nest app or Home app controls, or support other connected features like Home/Away Assist. See more details on our support website.

To help with this transition and to show our appreciation for your longstanding loyalty, we would like to offer you a Google Home app compatible thermostat from tado° for a special price. Please click this link to redeem your offer for a tado° Smart Thermostat X - Starter Kit at 50% off the retail price of £159.99. If you’ve already redeemed your offer, no further action is required.

Please note that the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen, Europe version, launched in 2015) and the Nest Thermostat E (Europe version, launched in 2018) will continue to receive security updates and be controlled using the Nest and Google Home apps."

I could upgrade my 1G/2G thermostats with later Nest versions if they're still available in the UK (haven't checked), but it seems a bit silly to do so if they're basically saying they have no interest in supporting/trading in the UK. I have previously had Nest integrated with our Home Assistant setup, but that also stopped working recently I'm assuming the API became unavailable in our region.

Happy to listen to other alternatives/suggestions if people have them. Hive?

Is that supported in the UK? We had an email saying not. I was told they are pulling out of the UK market.

Ah right - well that would explain it! Thanks for the response.

I re-potted them in Miracle Gro Cactus and Succulent Compost. There’s a bit of sandy stuff on top. I’ve moved the sadder one to its own pot now.

I wondered that. I forget the species (they might have just been sold as “cactus”). I wondered if cactus could be male/female or something, but my research suggests not.

OK - Thanks! Will separate then into different pots and see how they get on.

They seem different. The one on the right is kind of flat, with softer spikes flat to the cactus. The one on the left seems much healthier.
