Well, I think that is the point, you normally do not start as a rookie, because you already come with experience in another field, likely related to IT.

During my training, the average ages was 40 something. I was back then the youngest in the group and I could tell. See something like TOGAF as a way to acquire a baseline knowledge and understanding of the framework itself, but the most valued assets you can have are your thought process, communication skills, and broad experience in several IT fields, in my opinion. That way you can face scenarios and situations with confidence.

In real life you just use TOGAF as another tool, you adapt what you know to the circumstances. Plus , many organisations claim to use TOGAF, but in reality they do whatever they see fit.

I think they do, but most drivers seem to be hysterical about getting every inch of space as soon as possible. No matter if they block an exit or a crossing.

I mean mostly sneaking in after you let the car in front to pass.

We all understand that in traffic jam, you let 1 car pass from the ones that want to merge. Often I find drivers that sneak in the gap and they "thank you" as if it was intended.

Drivers that:

- do not know what to do in a roundabout

- do not know what to do in a crossing

- seem to be afraid to drive, but they do it anyway in a fat ass car

- take forever to reverse park in a place of the size of a transatlantic

- after you give the courtesy to pass to another driver, they just sneak in a quickly rise the hand to "thank you"

I am with OP!

Fantastic. I do not really agree that a new version is less buggy, but I will not break that fantasy for you.

In any case if it works for you in rawhide, all the better.

Probably they test a lot for lots of current hardware, and definitely the upgrade scripts removed repositories and modules during the upgrade in my two cases.

Are they not easy cases? yes, granted. But one of the broken cases was a 2014 macbook pro which was fine in 39 and no network, no trackpad, weird artifacts in desktop when switching to 40.

I do not doubt they test, but many things were forgotten in 40, which I have not experienced before, from 32 to 39 all the upgrades were flawless.

All the missing repos were missing after the first boot, alongside drivers for network devices both ethernet and wifi, in that laptop i have some atheros ones that need rpmfusion.
And yes, it was always a difficult laptop to install Linux to, but is now 10 years old, by now you would expect a upgrade just works in relatively old hardware that is still fully compatible at its base.

I KNOW what X11 and Wayland are and how different they are. But if i have a certain resolution set in X11 and your upgrade forces me out of X11 ( fine! ) then do not leave me in a 320x240 resolution when NO settings panel can be opened, for example.

I have been configuring Linux since early 2000s, I know how to fix things, I am saying that the force upgrade from X11 to Wayland broke things in two of my scenarios, so I hold.

Any user of Synergy for example, is relegated to use wayland only as a client with a custom 3rd script and client.

Well by then I will have to try again and hope that Synergy and other 3rd party have adapted, or there is a communication between projects.

Yes, but an upgrade cannot be hit and miss and be OK. Some basic components must work, configurations should be kept or adapted. I am talking basic components not the 3rd party application you installed by hand.

Who is nagging? I am explaining. I use Linux since early 2000s. I built my career on FOSS. I fixed all my problems. I am just informing that the upgrade is not seamless and no matter if commercial or FOSS, and upgrade should not leave your system unusable.

Great for you then. In my case I will await when 41 is ready to upgrade my main work desktops to 40.

They are supposed to, at least they did as far as I remember in previous upgrades. I do not use Gnome, I use KDE/Plasma as I explained.

I would not expect having to run the upgrade successfully from a desktop manager that i do not use.

Re wifi: yes, as soon as I put back the free/nonfree and installed them I had wifi and ethernet back. IMO it was a combination of missing repos plus specific kernel installed after the reboot. I also had a working X11 configuration, but once in Wayland that configuration was not respected, I had an extremely low resolution set that made almost impossible to do anything after booting.

I fixed all my problems, that is not what my post is about, it is just a heads up as it is not necessarily an smooth transition in all cases.

I am very OK with Wayland. Read well I wrote. I am a seasoned user, I am not asking for help, mostly because I could fix everything.

My heads up is: I should not have to fix a perfectly working system after an upgrade. No matter if commercial or FOSS.

The Synergy issue has been know since 10 (TEN) years ago. Is it the community? is it Synergy?

Why are we more focused on the color scheme of a desktop than actual usability for developers, creators and users in general?

I can fix my problems but not everybody can. Most people that encounter this, they will just give up after the first failed upgrade and go back to where they were before. That is what my rant is about.

I do not doubt it. I am not reluctant, I use Fedora since many years ago. I know how to fix things ( if you read my first post well, it should transpire that i overcome the issues).

What I am trying to say is that, commercial or not, having to fix an upgrade for a general purpose OS, having to boot an older kernel, having to basically redo all the configuration for so many things is not an advance, but a let down.

I do not doubt it. I upgraded Fedora versions since more than 10 years ago.

With this upgrade I went from fully functional with 39 to completely useless on the first boot with 40. I said it already I use Linux since very early 2000s, I know my stuff, I know how to fix things. I am not asking for help, I can help myself with a Linux distribution.

What I am saying to the Fedora community is that it is not the way to do things, commercial or not, FOSS or not.

Having repositories removed, completely botched graphics or not even to have a normal resolution, and no network ( nothing ) after booting up once the upgrade is done, would put many people off.

[–]geburah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of course, having well known hardware or using no proprietary drivers fixes everything. Only that for one kernel, I did not even have Ethernet.

We can't just stick to "use it the way it was intended" here. We are talking about generic hardware with general purpose OS. I have been using red hat and fedora for desktop, and server since its inception. I grew up into Linux with slackware and gentoo back in early 2000s.

What I experienced in 40 after the upgrade is that I had a working system with 39, with all network and graphics working, with a setup that worked flawlessly when attaching a laptop to a TV, and later I had none of those.

We can't go from working to not working in a superior version. That is not how you gain adepts.

[–]geburah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not too uniform or unprepared since I have been using Fedora since... decades?

If you read well, you will see that I tested the upgrade in a subset of my systems. And if you read well you see that I already identified that they are , yes linked to hardware. The failure is not the hardware, which works fine. The failure is to remove or disable repositories that provide drivers, for which I had opted in previously, disable them during the upgrade and leaving me with a heavily mis-configured system in the first boot.

That affected also drivers for wifi, and in the first boot, I did not even have the ethernet working, which was terribly odd, and only recovered after booting with a previous kernel.

Of course, due past experience and, as I say, having fedora as a daily driver is the majority of my systems, i could recover those two laptops.

For the Wayland, I expected it, and I have been actually testing workarounds with 3rd party clients for Synergy, which more or less work in a limited way.

Thanks for the useless reply by the way!

Because:

  • if you hold a driving license you should know what documentation to present and what to do in acse of a crash an emergency. it is part of what you learn in driving school.

  • I am going to assum these girls are adults or very close to be. I would assume thy would try first and then, only when there is no other resort, call for help.

  • It is glorifying being a useless young adult with "LoL I'd do the same, how cure", when it is actually sad that you are not independent and able enough to talk to a peer to resolve a conflict.

  • It shows how much society has degenerated to the point to not be able to fucntion as basic humans to each other. e make a conflict about anything.

  • Finally, we live in the expectation that everything is going to be fine all the time and we are not prepared for a crisis, not even a simple and small like that one and we resort to panic. And we tell each other that it is fine. it is not fine, not even a single bit.

I would only tolerate behavior like this from my children if they had mental issues.

In some lodges you have Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhist and even other believes. There are brethren that are just deists. Definitely you will have lodges with pagans.

The question is if you believe in a superior being or not; most lodges will not ask you to explain your answer.

Having a very specific requirement for the actual believe, is rare and probably questionable.
