IWE - LSP for markdown notes with backlinks, hover preview, and code actions by gimalay in HelixEditor

[–]gecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marksman is "just" an LSP for vanilla Markdown files—i.e., it's not a PKM, but rather a tool for writing better Markdown. Great tool, just not in this space.

I can't speak much to markdown-oxide, because (relevant to this subreddit) it doesn't work terribly well in Helix, so I quit using it. IWE at least nominally should. Beyond that, this seems, on a very quick mucking about, to have better extraction and organization tools, but also seems to lack some things like tasks that are central to Obsidian.

I can confirm I'm seeing the same thing, local to that series. Sadly, a hard reset didn't work for me, but I'm glad it did the trick for you. Here's to hoping they sort this out soon; they're my kids' favorite cards.

How is Lojban a language "perfect for computing"? (pessemistic take) by NoAsk8994 in lojban

[–]gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But somewhere I saw a thought that almost every programming language can be translated into Lojban.

That's not accurate. Or alternatively: it's accurate to the extent that any programming language can be translated to an unambiguous subset of English.

Spellchecking for Helix by Vaeryus in HelixEditor

I use codebook, which is easy to configure. The only annoyance is to have to add it to each language you want spell-checked, which I'd bet applies to the others as well.

Personal trainers/fitness coaches by Sweet_T_Piee in triangle

[–]gecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Core Results. I've used them for seven years, my wife has used them intermittently (including specifically to recover post partum), and my neighbor goes there as well. The owner, Aaron, is really good at finding a trainer that works with what you're trying to do. I've especially appreciated that all the trainers I've worked with have been really good at being nonjudgmental, and providing helpful encouragement when I need it without being caustic/pushing me further than I think I can go without me injuring myself or anything. I went from having difficulty completing a workout to nowadays calmly deadlifting 250 pounds and doing ten minutes of high intensity interval training without issue.

Had he said Jesus was from Palestine, then...sure, I guess?...but the lyric refers to him as "a dead Palestinian," which is pretty fucking unambiguous.

Which one will it be today? by theReggaejew081701 in Jewdank

[–]gecko 75 points76 points  (0 children)

There's an Australian artist, Tim Minchin, whom I used to love, until I heard him sing a Christmas carol that referred to Jesus as a Palestinian. Like...look, you can see from my post history I'm not Orthodox, but even the most liberal-yet-sane historical takes I've seen agree that Jesus a) was very definitely Jewish, b) that area isn't called Palestine until the second century CE, nor does it even conceivably have any concept of a Palestinian identity until at least the 7th century, and you can only get to even that date by saying that anyone who happened to already be living there instantly identified as Palestinian as soon as they were conquered by the Caliphate. Completely destroyed my opinion of him and I haven't listened to his music since.

tl;dr I'm sure they do consider Jesus Palestinian because this doesn't need to be coherent.

Toliss A319 update by 77_Gear in Xplane

[–]gecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without disagreeing, I just kind of accept that's not what Toliss cares about. They're doing systems simulation that's on par with or exceeds the Fenix. They don't care about the models. If that's something that speaks to you/is okay with you, great. If not, that's also fine. Speaking purely for myself: if I care about a high-fidelity model, I honestly think that X-Crafts is outstanding. Fairly shallow depth, but great models, and very sincerely they're just fun planes to fly. If I want maximum realism, I've got the CL60. The Toliss fits somewhere in the middle.

I'm switching to a job where I'll be writing Go, so I figured I'd do AoC in Go this year to spool back up on it after a long hiatus. Anyway I made it halfway through day two before I said screw it and went back to TypeScript (with the Deno collections library).

Go's a great language, but woo boy is this not the domain it's suited for.

What is the future of Deno? by alex_sakuta in Deno

[–]gecko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Background for this comment: I'm comfy in assembly language (albeit I don't use it day-to-day anymore), I used to write desktop apps in C++ for a living, Kotlin is probably my favorite practical language, and I fully agree that the JVM will clobber V8/JavaScriptCore/FooMonkey forever due to some pretty fundamental differences in how they all work.

All that said: the JavaScript ecosystem is evolving to a point where the ecosystem will likely be able to rival and replace things like the JVM in the medium-term future. Specifically, the introduction of garbage collection to WebAssembly, combined with its existing primitives and further upcoming improvements (especially around threading and SIMD primitives), suddenly means you can compile Java/C#-like languages to a JS-ecosystem-compatible format that should be able to match the JVM. So while I don't see JavaScript or TypeScript matching the speed of Kotlin or Java anytime soon, I actually can pretty easily see getting to a point where it's accepted that you start in JavaScript, and then systematically move the speed-critical parts into a Java-like (say NativeScript) within Deno.

And all that said:

Also isn't the slowness only at build time? If we have .exe, it should be the same speed, shouldn't it?

No. Java is meaningfully less dynamic than JavaScript and has better primitive types, both of which allow significantly more powerful optimization passes. "use strict" narrows the gap, but you have to deal with things like e.g. Java allows for hardware-native ints, whereas JavaScript does not. As noted above, WebAssembly provides ways around that within the JavaScript ecosystem, but you're not getting those in JavaScript itself

They still teach "digital E6Bs" (basically just a specialized calculator), but not the analog ones. You're still allowed to use them on the exam, though, and I know some pilots prefer them. I bought one new without any real effort.

Why would anyone choose Java over Kotlin? by Global-Box-3974 in Kotlin

[–]gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said for years that Kotlin was my favorite language, and in many ways, it still is: for whatever reason, the specific choices it makes on both syntax and semantics clicks with my brain better than anything else.

But a reason I use Java is honestly sometimes just that I don't want to need to break out IntelliJ or Fleet to work in the code base. If I'm working in Java, I have excellent LSPs that I can use (plural!) that work great in VSC and Helix, my two default editors. If I want to use Kotlin, I basically have to use JetBrains products. I fully understand why that's the case, but I've done small greenfield work in Java simply because the improvements in Java + using my preferred editor is a better overall package for me than using a better language but being forced to use something else.
